When can I apply to Frontier???

Hi, I'm a nursing student working on my BSN. I'm expected to graduate in May 2012. I've been looking at the Frontier school for some time now and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be applying there. I know you have to have the years experience, but since I pretty much know I want to go to grad school I wanted to know how early can you apply? I will have a job right out of school because I currently receive a service cancellable loan from my local hospital so I have to go work for them when I get done. Once I started working would I be able to go ahead and apply to the school even though I'm not completely done with my one year experience? I've heard that you can wait months before you get accepted and Frontier bound is a few months after that and classes don't start until a month or so after that! So I guess my question is can I apply while I'm still in my first year of experience as a RN and by the time I get through will all the applications and hopefully before bound I would have my years experience? Or can I not apply until I have a years experience first? I really want to begin applying asap after I get a job because I will be living with my parents and they said they would support me while I went to grad school (LIFESAVER)!!:yeah:

I think you would be more competitive if you have the minimum requirement when you apply (not your FB date). The program is competitive and many nurses with well over one year of experience will apply. My friend did not get accepted to the FNP program and she had over 12 years of nursing experience. She figured out later she probably did not have the strongest essay nor the best GPA 3.2. So just make sure you application is as strong as it can be before you apply! You should go to FNU's Facebook page and look at the discussion boards to see what others are saying about applying and getting accepted, it might give you a good picture of what students look like at Frontier. https://www.facebook.com/FrontierSchool

It will really also depend on how many people apply for the class you are applying for and what their applications look like. ((Also, the DNP requirement by 2015 is not set in stone, right now its a recommendation. :) They are talking about that too on the Frontier facebook page.))

Again, I wish you good luck!

Question on the GPA. I tried to get ahold of the school, but am unable to so thought I would post on here.

The site states that they take your GPA from your "most recent degree" ...so does this mean they will only calculate in my GPA from my Associates Degree In Nursing, and not do a cumulative of ALL post high school coursework?

The reason I ask, is I have above a 3.3 for my ADN and LPN coursework, but have a VERY LOW GPA for my post high school attempt to go to a state school and unfortunatly it pulls my cumulative below the required 2.7 (take GRE).

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

I take that to mean that it is in fact your RN degree that they will use the gpa from. You sound a lot like me, I also took a LPN to RN bridge and my gpa was good (I think 3.4 or 3.5) but my overall gpa isnt so hot bc I was 18 the first time I tried to go to college and didnt take it seriously. I grew up when I finally decided to become a nurse. I gradated LPN school with the highest gpa in my class and made mostly As and a few Bs in the LPN to RN bridge. I think for you and I both it should be obvious that we matured enough to be strong students in the nursing curriculum, just took us a while to get on the right track ;0) Good luck to you!

I just wanted to add that I am a new grad nurse with less than 1 year of nursing experience and got accepted into the midwifery program! But, I have been a doula since 2006 and shadowed a nurse-midwife for 1.5 year while in nursing school. Good luck! I think with determination anything is possible!

Just curious...what is the new school that you decided to go to? I am currently a Nursing student and am very interested in becoming a CNM. I want to explore as many options as I can for a program. Thanks!

@canyonforest

Sorry so late... You said that you found a new grad school, correct? What school is it? Is is online? How do you like it so far?

Thanks! Mrs.D.

yes, St. Joseph College of Maine...the FNP program is exceptional:)

the faculty is the best I

have dealt with....

The essay I submitted for acceptance was the strongest I have ever done, because it was make or break-

5 months later, St. Joseph's said yes.....

and yes most of the work is online

also, St. Joseph's has an outstanding virtual library:)

Okay, so let me get this straight... you can't apply while you're working on your 1 year RN experience? Because I heard differently from a current student of FNU. She applied before she had 1 year of RN experience and was just wait listed to the next class after her one year mark. I met her at a Case Day that I was invited to as a hopeful. She encouraged me to go ahead and apply for the class that I'll be eligible to attend. Am I wrong in doing this? I will have my 1 year experience in January of 2012, so I'm applying to class 111 in February. I think I may just have to call the school because it seems like everyone is saying something slightly different. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Heather

I applied and got in while I was working on my one year of experience. By the time I start I will have about 18 months. I deferred one class. I would encourage you to apply when you are ready!

Thanks! Yes, I still plan on applying early. I'm sending in my packet tomorrow morning as a matter of fact! :) Good luck everyone!!! I think I'm going to start a discussion for Bridge Class 111 so we can talk about everything.
