New nurse question:

If the doc orders IV lidocaine stat and the patient already has an open PIV running d5w how would you give the lidocaine?

Tx everyone who answers! Trying to settle an argument :)

Flush before and after with NS and give it.

Just push it. Lidocaine is compatible with D5. Just flush after the push to get it in unless the IV is running wide open.

Uhhhhh? What is there to debate here?

I don't understand the issue?

If you have an order to give a drug IV STAT and you have a PIV, where else would you put it?

And why wouldn't you just change the IV to NS?

It is compatible with D5W and I believe when it is mixed/diluted it is done in D5W (over NS.)

In that case it should be given sublingually

or intrathecally....depending on the doctor's preference....but I'd definitely ask!!

Not to rag on the OP, but I would like to know what the "bet" is they're trying to settle.

push it into the NS tubing port while it is infusing. IV lido is mixed in D5.
