Hey,

Just saying Hi to everyone, new here! I actually am still in high school, Im a junior , 17yrs.old, and very interested in the nursing career. I've been looking around and have some questions.

My ideal plan is to go to a CSU (ca state university) to get my BSN. I would really like to go on and get a MSN and become a CRNA. But from what I've read you need at least one year experience in critical care to apply for CRNA program. What consitutes critical care? Besides the obvious ICU's, for instance does working in an emergency room work?

Also, are new grads generally hired in ICU faciltys? Is it obtainable to be accepted at a CRNA school, after only 1 year experince? or is 3+ years usually the average?

Ideally I would like to be finished with my schooling my age 30, to be able to have a family, kids, ect. My plan,18- 22yrs BSN, 22-24yrs- critical care experience(2 yrs), and then CRNA schooling 24-27 yrs. From you experienced nurses does this seem obtainable? or if not, what do you think would take longer?

Thanks for your replies, its apprecaited! I know this does not really fit under "introductionas and greetings", I will also post in other sections. Thanks agian!

Prospective Nursing Student,

Katie

wow! it sounds like you have some awesome plans. good for you! as far as the icu goes, there are different areas of critical care, but i don't think that the emergency room would qualify, technically. the er is a specialty among itself. there are some hospitals that will hire into the icu after school, but those places will usually have a icu training course in addition to the usual preceptorship. if a place wants you to work in the icu without the training course-don't do it. i really don't have any info on the crna, but someone will come along to help.

glad that you are here.

Here's a link to the pre-CRNA inquiry form. Lots of useful information there :). Good luck!

Hi Katie! Welcome to the board. As a matter of fact, what you're speaking of is very attainable and I am living proof! I graduated with my BSN when I was 22, went to work directly in a CVICU/CCU, worked there for a year and then transferred to a level 1 ER. I started CRNA school when I was 24 (after two years of work) and I will graduate next December when I'm 26......whew! Set your goals and stick to them....maintain good grades and learn as much as you can.....you're on the right path. Good luck to you!!! PM me if you have any questions!
