I am considering a job in field case management, mostly involving workmans comp. I know I would like the work, as I have done some case management in the past and really liked it, but I have concerns about work/life balance. Does anyone have any advice on this? I have 3 small children, and the job is home based but would involve quite a bit of driving time, going to doctor's appointments, etc. The appeal of setting my own schedule and not being inside all day is very appealing, however I don't want to end up in a situtation where I am working 50 hours every week because no matter how much I like the work, that will burn me out. I was told that more than 8 hour days is not expected. Thank you in advance for any advice.

I would do some research on the company to get feedback. I recently applied for a workers comp field case manager position with Coventry Workers Comp, but decided not to pursue it as it entailed ALOT of paper work and alot of overtime. Some one from this board advised me to check out the company for feedback from current and former employees. Because of this site I got an inside look about the company I was apply to. Alot of companies lie about the actual conditions in an attempt to lure you in because they need the nurse to fill their contracts.......and also so the managers can get their bonuses, too!!!!

I worked for Coventry and it is actually a good company. THe overtime is not mandatory. There is a lot of paperwork. I currently work for a competitor and I would be happy to talk more about it with you if you would like to know:)

Hi! I'm new to this site. I am considering a position as a field case mgr for worker's comp with a national company. They provide a base salary and the they mentioned billable hours. Can anyone explain to me how billable hours work?

Yes, I would be interested in talking with you further about this. Do you happen to work for GENEX? It really seems like a great job, but involves a lot of driving which isn't all bad since it's billable.

Mu understanding of billable hours is that you have to account for time that you spend working on a case and that can include emails, driving time, phone calls, reports, doctors appointments etc. Some businesses have restricitions on what can be billed for. The company you work for will most likely set a monthly billable number of hours that needs to be met by you in order to maintain your status. Hope that helps.

To lmader- Thank you so much for that info! That explains a lot! The company said they offer a base salary and you get paid for any hours over 150 hrs. So it sounds like I would have to maintain at least 150 billable hours per month and anything over that would be payable to me.

Do you know what the salary range is for a field case manager position? This would be in the Pa/NJ region. I was told the base salary would be $55K to 60K. Any insight or info anyone can give would be appreciated.

Are there any Case Managers in the Miami area who could tell me a good company to apply for inexperienced Case Managers.? My only experience is 7 yrs of bedside nursing on a Meg/Surg/Tele floor. I would be forever grateful if someone will help me escape my current situation.

Worked as a telephonic nurse case manager for an insurance company in NJ. The salary range that I have seen is 68k-85k....you get the higher end the more experience you have.

Question for you people that are doing CM... do all of you have a BS in Nursing? I am an AD with a BS in Social Sciences but have about 36 yrs exp as an RN in many areas of nursing..the last 10 in the OR...looking for a change these days..thanks
