Hi!

Those of you that work on Telemetry/Cardiac Units, what kind of speciality training does your Telemetry/Monitor Techs get in orientation and annual training?

Thank you for your reply!

The tele techs at my hospital get about a 2 month orientation. They have online modules and in person EKG interpretation classes. Most tele techs are either LPNs that switched jobs when the LPN role was phased out at my hospital or Paramedics.

At my hospital, it is different. tele tech's are man-on-the-street, who took an ekg course.

Our tele techs take a course on EKG interpretation, about 32 hours of class time and some study at home. Some were CNA/PCT, patient transport etc. At my hospital they pay $3-4 more an hour for a much easier job, I'd go for it if I wasn't already looking for an RN spot.

I'm currently an Telemetry Tech at a hospital. No prior experience. It was a 3 month training program with a competetancy at the end. I'm also going to nursing school. Great experience !! 12 hr shifts btw

Our monitor techs get 6 hours of EKG class and then 3-12 hour shifts of orientation. Not enough in my opinion. When I was a monitor tech I got 3-8 hour classes to learn the material and 3-12 hour shifts of orientation. And it was still not enough. But whatever. I don't make the decisions, I just follow the rules.
