RN school wait lists in BC

World Canada CA Programs

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

wooohooooo! I love status changes! Did your admissions officer ever email you back?

No she didn't, i called general admissions yesterday after i tried calling her but she wasn't taking calls yet. They said to just wait it out as she was probably really busy with application reviews.

I guess 600 applications is a lot to go through. It's really hard to wait for results, but at least we know they are being thorough :redbeathe. I just wish we had some specific dates to work with. They changed the application deadline by 6 weeks this intake, I wonder if we'll find out sooner than last Jan?....

Well I have some info guys. I just heard back from **** and we have a LONG wait ahead of us:) the 6 week thing is just to get through admissions, those who don't meet all the requirements don't even get sent to the nursing dept. So we have all been sent there since we all got that email that we are being reviewed :) yay. the nursing dept doesn't even begin assessing applications until after Aug 31st. She said the first shortlist is usually complete by Oct and final decisions by NOV 30th:uhoh3: they

Work weekends for us trying to get everything done...it's gonna be a long 3 months

I also received an email from ******. She said they are reviewing applications from sept to oct :|

Awww wow. Well thanks for looking into it!! I guess we can just relax and wait.. Boo! lol

I don't know about the relax part but I definitely agree with the BOOOO:lol2:

Well I registered for my CPR HCP through St.Johns Ambulance. I figure even if I don't get in for Jan (which of course I hope I do), I will need the training eventually :) 80 bucks with book for 1 day in Sept.....I actually cant wait for school to start in Sept, I miss the routine....and it's not like we're really getting a summer anyways.

Agreed! I did my cpr hcp last year through St John's and it was good! How goes the waiting? This really is taking forever. All of my applications haven't changed in so long.

Hey,

Do you two know what date the academic year starts in January exactly? Im trying to book flights right now and would like to give myself a couple weeks before school starts (if I hopefully crossed fingers get accepted)

Sorry I don't. I assume the very beginning of January as is usual with many academic semesters.

I think Jan 9 or 10....read that somewhere I think :) the wait is brutal but at least I have stopped checking my status everyday since I know there will be nothing until sept....2 weeks until ethics and anatomy.. Wahooo! I am such a nerd.... :)
