UBC nursing application 2011

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hello,

I'm new to the site and I saw the thread for last years appilcants to UBC nursing so I thought I would start one for this year.

How is the application going for everyone, any tips from 2010 intake?

Hi all,

Congrats to our newly accepted comrads! I just registered in Group 3, anyone else with me? Also, I have an appointment to try on Scrubs at 11am on Friday, I hear someone else from the program will be in then as well. Join us if this time works for you! HugBug, I would also be keen to meet up before orientation. Can't wait to meet you all! This summer seems to be going by so fast which can only mean that school will be starting very soon.

I'm going to be in town this week looking for housing with my boyfriend. We're interested in a 1 or 2 bedroom place with parking, bike storage and laundry, $1200 or less. I'm thinking somewhere between campus and just east of VGH. We are both new to Vancouver, moving in from eastern BC. We're looking to start a lease either mid August or beginning of September. Any thoughts or leads would be great.

I know this has been said lots but I agree that this forum has been super helpful, we will clearly make an amazing group of kind, supportive nurses! Good luck to anyone still on the waiting list, my fingers are crossed that you will hear good news soon.

CONGRATS Iris..so exciting!!! And fingers crossed for anyone else still waiting :) Would love to meet up before hand.. can't wait to meet everyone and get this program started lol!

I registered Tuesday morning for group B, group A was already full... Who else can't WAIT for textbooks?!?! I just want to hurry up and 'rip the bandaid' and find out the costs!

I have 2 jobs that I am trying to keep; Both (thankfully) have bosses that are willing to offer me shifts and I can work whatever I can do. I'm wondering how much I'm going to be able to do with reading and assignments, but keeping my fingers crossed that I can have a little income!

Erob- I know some people that rent a few places in the UBC-Vancouver area, very nice & well-kept places, too! I will find out some info and let you know if anything might work for you!

Can't wait! :)

Yes the textbook list is SO LONG.....Like 7 books for 1 course? That list got me quite scared :S

And Erob, check out the website called "AMS RENTSLINE" which is a website for apt/room rents near UBC/Vancouver area.

Also there is an apartment right by the village at UBC which is ~1200/mo for one bedroom! I used to live there and loved the place! Its called Ross House or McKenzie House (there are two buildings side by side). Its a 13 stories building very clean and well kept!

Is the text book list out?? Where did you find if it is?

I keep checking the link that was provided in the Welcome letter and SSC and I don't see it :S

The list for this year isn't out yet...but I found a list for last year in UBC Nursing website for current BSN students. I'm assuming it is going to be pretty much the same except maybe editions since the courses haven't changed!

Hi everyone!

Has anyone got their stethoscope yet, and does anyone know which Littmann model we need to have?

Thanks

Lolo 4,

I got my Stethoscope, the Littman Classic II S.E. model. I asked a family member who is an O.R. Nurse and she said to stick with that one, and the only time you might need something different is to use a smaller Infant chestpiece would be for Peds rotations, and most hospitals and clinics have those in the Unit.

Hey guys,

I received your schedule (as I am making your agenda) and you need your scrubs for September 27th as you have your 2 shadow days around that time. Also, as for text books... WAIT to buy them until you are in school. I know you all are so excited and want to buy them now but it is SO expensive new I think the total cost if you get all is just under $2000. We (the year ahead) sell our old books and have a book consignment within your first week in school so I recommend waiting. Also some of the professors are changing the books so wait until you get your list and wait until you get to school if you can because there will be lots of upper years selling their books for a lot cheaper.

Also... the schedule always changes throughout the year as clinical placements change last minute all the time. Keeping jobs is very hard in this program as you might have clinical 2-3 days a week and later in the year that might mean weekends. Just a heads up!

THanks k_mb for the info... you are right, I am soooo ready to buy textbooks, moreso to just part with the money so I know its gone and I dont have it sitting in my account as a tease..... I will wait... but tell all your fellow 'uppers' to check out this site for people asking for books!!!!!

thx

Where are you guys ordering your stethoscope and blood pressure cuff from? I thought about buying it from UBC Bookstore but it's so expensive..

I will be selling my BP cuff for $15 at the book consignment, I'm sure others will do the same as you only need it for the first semester (Sept-Dec) and then you never really use it again.
