Second-Entry Nursing Programs - 2014 Hopeful

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting this topic for those who are applying to 2nd-entry programs, to start in 2014.

A bit about myself:

I'll be applying to University of Ottawa and University of Toronto.

Graduated with a Social Science degree from Ottawa U w/ 7.2 CGPA (aka 3.33 on 4.0 scale, or a B+)

A lot of community involvement in health promotion, youth counseling programs, women's health research..

Currently taking the prerequisites...

I'm kind of nervous about the applications because I know how competitive these programs are... Any advice from current 2-year BScN students would be great!

Let's get this thread going :up:

Thanks for all your advice Emma! It really helps. Good luck with the course :)

Shaylynn27 how are you finding the course!?

It's so much info! Pretty intense. It's not hard material, it's just a lot of material. How are you finding it? Have you gotten far in the course? @isla88

I feel so overwhelmed haha! I finished the first assignment already and I book the first midterm. I know what you mean, its a lot of material! are you taking other classes at the moment?

@Isla88

I don't think it matters at all. I mean, you should be handing each quiz/assignment/exam in by their order (1, 2, 3), but I think that's all that matters. Perhaps do your assignment first so it helps prepare you for your quiz and exam, but I don't think it actually matters.

@ShayLynn27

Glad to help :) We're all in this together, right? Hope you're doing well with the course!

@Emma did you feel the midterm closely related to the SelfQuiz or not so much?

I just finished the course. I think you should definitely complete the assignment first, then the quiz, then the MT. It wasn't awful, but it was a massive amount of info and with the pressure on to get a good grade it was a lot of work. I ended up having to purchase 2 extensions since I lost focus in the summer and just didn't get the work done when I should have. I found the exams to be pretty easy. Study the diagrams and tables in the textbook well. I found some online lectures from WWW.PROFESSOR FINK.COM and they really helped with firming up some of the more challenging concepts for me. I'm someone who loves lectures and it filled some of the gaps in a lot better than just reading the text.

Congrats on finishing the course! and thank you for the information! I am worried because I need to finish the course by April to hopefully start at OttawaU. I am working extremely fast but I am worried about the midterms.

@isla88 It seems as though you're keeping up with the material though! If you're already done the first quiz then you must be basically 1/3 done the material. Don't stress! I think you're on the right track. I'm pretty much as far as you are.

Wow, I wish I had discovered this thread sooner!

I am also applying to second-entry programs for 2014. I have a degree in International development from an ontario university (although I'm from the prairies), and I've spent 7 years working at a personal care home as a recreation staff. I'm also currently taking BIO 235 from Athabasca. I'm also very nervous becuase it's my first choice program and they only take 12-24 students.

My other choice is Western, and if that doesn't work out either I might look at Calgary. My problem is that I don't have an English, psychology, microbiology course for a lot of programs prereqs, and I'm trying to avoid having to take as many beforehand as possible.

I'm so annoyed that Ottawa doesn't let you know until mid-March! So much time just wondering and waiting! I'm happy at least that I found this thread where we can wait together.

Has anyone else heard about the BIOL 235 being accepted as a pre-req for ANP? I got mixed facts when I contacted different people at OttawaU. Some said that BIOL 235 was sufficient, some said that since it did not cover all body systems, it had to be taken in conjunction with another 6 credit physiology course at Athabasca, BIOL 230. I decided to just risk it and apply anyways. I connected with a current student at Ottawa on Facebook who said that she took both BIOL 230 and 235, but she heard of other people getting in with just 235 :S.

Also, I'm just preparing for Assignment/Quiz/Midterm #2, and I started the course in August (I fell behind for a month or two), so those who said you started in January are on a really good pace!

Hi Fingers_crossed! I am glad we are all in this together. I contacted Ottawa and they told me the Biol 235 would be enough to cover the prereq for anatomy/physiology, so I am hoping this is it. Did you send your midterm grades for that course? I read something that says that you should send your midterm grades for the course you are currently taking or something. The Ottawa program is very small so lets hope we all get in! Did you consider Toronto as well? Good Luck
