Humber College RPN Entrance Exam

taking entrance exam at humber college, looking for help in preparing for chemistry and bio section, what should I study?, the testing centre keeps telling me it's basic chem and bio, I never took chem and bio and have no idea what they mean by basic, PLEASE help me

If you've never took chem or bio could you even get into the program?? Most places I applied to said it's a requirement to have at least a 60% from bio and either chem or physics to get into the program.

Humbers admission requirements for the program are based solely upon the results of the admission test. They don't care what your marks where like in high school let alone if you took any science courses. Nonetheless I'm preparing to write the test in about a week and I was wondering how you did? Did you get into the RPN program? Also, I know you wrote the pre admission a while back but if you remember anything at all for chem & bio that would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe what to study for, thanks!

If you are referring to the HOAE, theres honestly no way to study for it. I took it last weekend I did study.. there were a couple of questions on chemistry. But nothing to do with the periodic table, um some were hard and I had no idea, not just the sciences part, some of the spelling, some of the words I've never seen before and diseases I've never heard before/learned. I bought a book off of Ibooks, called PSB, it's the only one on Ibooks referring to the HOAE... it did help a little bit but then again I aced the book questions and the test not so much. It did help though with how the questions will be asked, the non-verbal and spelling helped. It was around $8 bucks, and half decent, there are other books but they are like $200, don't waste your money. I wish I could give you more on what to focus on but it's SO broad in topics.

I'd say the hardest part is that it's all timed, they say you have 4 hours but you don't, all 5 sections are timed and can be very hard to keep track off, you can't go back into a section once you've finished it and if you're out of time, you have to end that section there. Just pace yourself and be very aware of the time, some time slots are SHORT :wideyed: which sucks...

Do your best and the rest will follow, the test doesn't define you as a student, and personally I don't think it's fair. I'm in college now and I'm took health sciences classes last semester and some of the questions correlated with that level. That test even says "we don't expect you to know all of the answers" and you WON'T & that's okay :).

I'm applying for RPN too and hoping for the best..

I forgot to add.. I knew someone last year who failed and still got in, not to Humber but another school.

I've applied to other schools, but Humber is my first choice. I say that only because commuting for me is not an option -the closer the school the better. I hate when people refer to the Humber pre admissions test as HOAE, it's not the same. I spoke to many admissions coordinators at multiple schools and they all say Humber provides its own test. The scary thing is that Humbers admission requirements are solely based on how well you do on their pre admissions exam. You pass, you get it, you fail.... you dont get in! Simple enough.

I know there is an essay portion, and they give everyone a different essay topic, then you have chemistry and biology (which I'm completely scared of) and a math portion. I'm not worried about the essay or math portions, those two categories don't require much studying. If you know how to write an essay I don't know what else you can study for? And same goes for the math, once you learn the basics you can apply it to any equation.

I did hear that you have to use the metric system for converting eg.. L- to- mL etc...

Learning about the cell and its functions, also knowing about ATP.

Chemistry on the other hand is a complete mystery (sick to my stomach).

I feel like giving up asking people the premise of the exam. Everyone gets tight lipped. How is guiding someone on what to study a felony. Once Im finished writing I wont mind answering these questions. But until tell good luck everyone!

It can be considered a form of plagiarism. Many schools are pretty strict regarding sharing information from tests, it is academically dishonest and can result in disciplinary action and even expulsion. Some even make you sign documents agreeing that you will not share information. That's probably why.

That sounds extremely unlikely. The probability of the school knowing the actions I persue are practically impossible. The chances are even slimmer if the "said person" who wrote the pre admissions test (who shared information about the exam) was not successful in gaining admissions to school(s) themselves. Also, it is extremely easy for a school to change the contents of an exam. But just to clarify I have not asked for the exact content of the pre admission just a guideline on what to study (like what is covered during those 3 hours). If what I'm asking is a form of plagiarism then even the schools themselves should be penalized because they give you a guide on what to study, on their official schoold site.

I'm just telling you the policies at the schools I attend, and It's actually taken quite seriously. I completed an RPN program and am now in the BScN program and its no different. A study guide is different, if you already have one from Humber then what kind of information are you looking for on top of that in your posts?

Even during my skills testing if you left the classroom and tried to give any advice to students waiting, you received an unsatisfactory, no questions asked. Academic integrity is a big deal to the schools.

Just because the school may not know doesn't mean it isn't still against school policy. I would invite you to research this further if you are questioning it :)

Also, there is no need for defensiveness. I am not saying you are plagiarizing I am simply answering your question in regards to why people may not be providing you with the details you are looking for.

What I'm asking was clearly covered in my reply, seems like you flew right thru that part. I have not once asked for something that would compromise the integrity of The exam, but you wouldn't know that because you started persecuting me at first glance. I thought the premise of this site was to ask real people real question. If you don't want to add anything helpful to the thread and/or are conflicted by what's being asked I invite you to join other threads. I'm sure there are a lot more suited to you, elsewhere.
