Being bullied by my clinical instructor

World Canada CA Programs

I am currently enrolled in Langara nursing program. My term 5 clinical instructor bullies me. She constantly talks down to me and gives me negative comments about my practice. I have cried everyday I have been in clinical. My instructor even yells at me in front of my patients and other nursing staffs. I have talked to the school about my situation and all they could suggest for me was to withdraw from the semester and retake it in January 2014. My previous clinical instructors have never had a problem with me and has told me repeatedly I would make a great nurse. Even the staff at my clinical placement had said I was wonderful and a good nurse. I don't understand why my instructor hates me so much, she has even told me she was going to fail since the beginning of the term. I am currently looking into transferring to another school does anyone know how I would go about it?

Thank you,

Hello.Kitty

I really don't have much advice but I'm sorry for your current situation and hope you get some answers! I'm sending you a lot of positive thoughts :)

How much time do you have left with this instructor? You might want to confront her in a professional way. Ask her if you have done something to upset her? Ask her what can you do to do better. You will meet people like this as a nurse and I have found that confronting them usually does the trick. I am sorry you are going through this as the instructor is not a good role model and you now have learned how not to behave.

Agree with Imccrn62. While it may be difficult for you to do, I think it's your best choice. Take a deep breath and do it. It's very unfortunate that you are in this situation but there are people like this everywhere. Don't let them steal your sunshine.

I agree a meeting is necessary. I am flabbergasted that the school would suggest a retake of the course without even suggesting how to improve the relationship.

I have seen this type of behavior exhibited in one case that landed on my lawyer's desk when the instructor accused the student of illegal activity. The student won but the cost to do so was very high. She had to change schools, the original school would not release her transcript until the court system was involved. I have a very low opinion of private schools not affiliated with colleges as a result of this encounter. It may not be a fair assessment but... they are a for profit place. If you are not fighting back they could easily have you repeat a term (at big bucks).

Respectfully ask to discuss as other posters have suggested. if there is no resolution be prepared to stand up for yourself and either repeat the term or find another solution.

OP:

are you discussing Langara in Vancouver? If so, ask to have the thread moved to the Canadian Forum where current and past Langara students hang out.

I had a horrible term 7 clinical instructor when I was at Langara. She was very persecutorial, and not supportive. Even in the classroom, her anecdotes were about how she hounded someone under her supervision until the other nurse quit her job. PM me for the name if you want. Anyways... I think she was trying to fail me so I went to her supervisor and lodged a formal complaint. After that the instructor she had to write everything out all formal like, so she couldn't just fail me without cause. Like you, all my previous instructors said I was a good student. I was a mature student so maybe that made a difference? At some point you just have to smile and keep your head down. The end of term is only a month away, right?!

Hey chihuahuaman! Can you PM the instructor's name so I can have a heads-up? Also, do you remember the clinical placements to choose from? Thanks a bundle in advance!
