Before the Morning (Failed CRNE three times. what now?)

World Canada CRNE

Published

I just received a bad news. My nursing career is over. Yes, I am no longer one of you, but I feel a need to share my story. I have failed the CRNE for the third time and honestly, I don't know what is there left for me. I know things happen for a reason. sometimes, i just think that GOD is being so unfair. Throughout my nursing school, all i did was to do my best both theory and clinical. I have received praises being a "very good" Graduate Nurse. But then again, all has to end with an examination that I can't seem to pass even though I have put my thoughts and heart on preparing for it. At some point, I think of myself as a dumb individual, up for no good. If nursing was not meant for me, why did HE made it possible for me to even complete my Degree Program? I have so many questions to GOD right now. I have prayed hard for that moment of finally receiving a letter with the word "PASS" on it, but instead a phone call saying I have failed on my third attempt and had to wait for a letter containing my options.

Nursing Has always been my dream and I can't see myself pursuing other career in life. I don't think I can handle another 4 years of schooling or even the strength to even try to put my life back on track. I know that God has a reason for why I'm going through this test right now (one I consider the hardest test in my life, so far), and probably there is more to come. I have so much faith in him that in spite it all, I still look forward to that one morning of waking up from my sleep and the pain, the sadness, the sufferings are over. I know that HE works in ways unimaginable. I know that he hears my prayer and in his own time he'll grant those prayers. But for now, all I needed is some sort of encouragement from you, whoever you are reading this post right now.

I still thank GOD because I have my life, I am breathing, I can still appreciate all the good things he had created. As long as there is tomorrow, I will continue to fight a good fight!

The information I gathered from the California Board of Nursing indicates that you must be licensed in the country where you obtained your education or have a very good reason why not. I think this is the part that confused you:

  • IN ADDITION FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:
    • A. Send Breakdown of Educational Program for International Nursing Programs form to your school with the Request for Transcript form. Also provide the Certified English Translation form to your certified translator if your transcript is not in English. (See Supplemental Application Instructions for International Graduates with the application.)
    • B. Submit a copy of your license or diploma that allows you to practice professional nursing in the country where you were educated. If you do not hold a license, a written explanation is required. Also, provide copies of your certificates for midwifery and psychiatric nursing, if applicable.

Some countries don't issue licenses, but Canada does (the permit to practice). They will assess your application in California if you don't have a license but they want a written explanation of why you don't have a license. (And you can't get a license here without passing the CRNE. Catch 22...) If that explanation isn't acceptable to them, then they won't give you authorization to test. They will, of course, keep your money.

One way or another, you would have to pass the NCLEX-RN to get a California license.

I have received the letter containing my options. re-entry program is not one of my options. rather, they are requiring me to take nursing school all over again (4-years). the fact that I'm a point away from passing it on my third attempt (got 141 passing of 142) is really breaking me to pieces right now! i could consider having my marks re-scored but they said they already did. tell me not to quit now, but i cant afford going back to school for another 4years. I have my student loan and other stuff to pay. life is harsh! I don't know if anyone here has to go through the same situation that I'm going through right now. I have no more tears to shed! Life can throw any kind of trial to me right now and I could careless.

Yahy,

I just want to join all in this thread to encourage you not to give up. It's true life could be harsh sometimes. But you must now try and share your situation with your family and friends (if you have not done it yet) no matter how difficult it sounds. They are the ones close to you who can provide you some comfort and perhaps an advice or a solution that you do not at all expect...There must be a solution of some kind. Afterall you do have all the university credits...If it is not nursing perhaps some of the credits could be applicable to other degree programs, like psychology or social science. Perhaps you do not want to hear about it now because nursing was your goal, but perhaps as shock of the news wears off, you would be able to reevaluate the situation and see other options...I'm wishing you the best!!!

Yahy,

I'm truly sorry to hear that news. My heart goes to you. I wish I can help you in some way. I also believe that everything happens for a reason. But I know it is hard to accept the reason for what your going true. Life is sometimes unless but what can you do except try our best and hope that it's good enough. It's hard right now but life will go on. There's better plan for you out there and hopefully you'll find it soon. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your result.

Dear Yahy,

I am truly sorry to hear the bad news from you.

I hear and feel your pain- truly I am..

I have failed once by 1 point as well, and now waiting my result from 2nd attempt.

I cannot even sleep as time comes so close to know if I pass or not. Even so, I know I cannot compare my frustration and anxiety to yours.

However, please DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM!!!

As others said, I do strongly believe things happen for a reason.

I am sure there are other ways you can still seek to become a RN.

Think positive and look straight forward. Be confident!

I know it's easy to say, but well, here I am to give you some info that you might like!

For about taking N-CLEX to become a RN in the states, I am sure it is all different in each state.

For an example, a friend of mine who failed once in CRNE had an opportunity to take a NCLEX exam in one of the states (in North Dakota), passed the exam and got a full license to work as a RN. She took the NCLEX because she also feared of the worst case senario that she failed again and would not be able to work as a RN in Canada. Later, she also passed CRNE in her 2nd attept but she decided to work in the states and is currently working as a RN in the states.

Unfortunately I do not know more details of how she did it- I wish I do still keep in touch with her but really no..- but my point is there could be a way!

Please look carefully into every each state to see if you have any options to take NCLEX without holding a current Canadian license. I am sure California cannot be your option, but maybe other state could be possible. I really wish to hear good news from you after all. You've got my prayer. Believe in yourself! =)

thank you for the prayers you guys! ofcourse, I won't give up just like that... and I'm looking to any possibility especially now that I have found out one doesn't necessarily has to have a License but a 4 year degree would beneeded to apply to some states. For whatever reason this is happening to me now, I know our God is a faithful God and he keeps his promises and and never tires of hearing our prayers... I'm finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi Yahy,

Just wonder if you call your college of nursing (where you graduated), generally, after a person failed three times, you have the 2nd option of completing an assessment course ( usually a week), then the college will offer you two more chances to re-write the CRNE exam.

Hope this info may help you in some ways.

Hello Tedy,

Are you sure about that? CARNA have given only two options and I asked them so many times if there's any other way other than taking the program all over again and they said none and which applies to every other provinces in Canada. where did you learn about this? I would really love to hear more. nonetheless, I'll try to contact the university about this. thank you!

it's not the university you ask, you need to ask the college of nursing of the province ( ie, if you graduate from U of Toronto, you need to ask College of Nursing in Ontario).

It's CARNA in ALberta tedy and no, apparently that isn't one of my options. I have called them the day I received my letter. either I take the whole nursing program again or provide them with such reasons like death of a family member, etc. Those are my only options and the lady said which applies to every province in Canada except Quebec/
