What's the Job market like?

U.S.A. California

Published

I am in an ADN program in Az, done in may 07 and my husband wants to move back to the LA county area. Specifically, La Mirada/Norwalk, right around there. Anyway, the job market here is smoking for LPNs and RNs. Hospitals are paying double time, giving bonuses and all that stuff for RNs to work OT. New grad pay isn't all that compared to what I've seen in Cali, but as a travel RN or pool, it seems to be comparable.

So my main question, how is the job market out there in Southern Cali? Are they as short for nurses as we are out here in Phoenix? Do hospitals give bonuses for OT and contracts, and readily hire new grads with LPN experience?

Thanks for any info!!!! I search the first two pages and didn't see any threads like this so I thought it would be ok if I posted.

The job market for nursing is very strong in Southern California. However, the cost of living is sky-high. Just take one good, careful look at advertisements for apartments or houses in Norwalk and La Mirada and you might be sticker-shocked at how expensive things are.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it!

Ikwym about the high cost of living in Socal. It is one of the reasons I would much prefer to stay in Phx, the cost of living here is great and the pay for RNs is great too. But my husband is from Norwalk and we are at a point right now where we could afford it, plus if we sold our house we'd have 200K down on a house there. He makes over 110K a year and the co's he's been talking to down there are willing to pay him more. So it looks like we will be moving.

I'm glad to hear the job market is good there. I'm not familiar with any of the hospitals in that area though. Are there specific ones that anyone knows of that I should look at?

Thanks in advance.
