University of San Francisco ME-CNL Summer 2013

U.S.A. California

Hey everybody,

I didn't see a thread yet for the Summer 2013 cohort for USF Masters Clinical Nurse Leader Program so I decided to make one. The application deadline is coming up and figured it would be great to meet fellow applicants and stress out together haha

@Madrid.navarro2sad8i I wouldn't worry too much about buying a bunch of stuff right away. Since it's such short notice about acceptance and start dates, I would focus more on getting prepared to start school (i.e. financial aid, housing, transportation, getting your student id card, etc.) Personally, for everyone moving, it would just be more stuff to pack, move, and unpack. You're better off just waiting, and buying things once it gets closer to the semester that you actually need them. Textbooks will be your first big purchase. And then a few weeks into the semester, I bought a stethoscope so I could practice my skills and have my own to use in the skills lab and at home. I didn't worry about buying scrubs and shoes and all the stuff for clinicals until closer to the end of my first semester.

Quick question Consssss. Who did your e-mail come from so I know who to look forward to when receiving an e-mail?

Sorry about all the questions folks! I really do appreciate everyone in answering our 829374892374298374 questions!

The email was from [email protected]. It just said to check the admission status on the website that we applied from so you can maybe even just check that to see if anything is updated or not. It's the app.applyyourself.com website for USF.

@DAS225 - Did you have enough time to take care of financial aid and get enough money from financial aid to take care of tuition, books, housing, etc? Do they have some kind of leeway for the 1st semester since they notified us rather late? Like Madrid.navarro2sad8i, I am also moving from socal and the cost to move up there alone is going to be thousands of dollars!

@ DAS225 - Thanks for the input! At this point I'm most nervous about making the move... Like lolibear, I'm coming for Orange County, so I'm worried I won't have enough time to square financial aid. Did you find that you were able to work things out with the school F.A. office easily?

To everyone else, I received the acceptance letter today :) It's almost a little bit surreal. When I first started this whole application process (MONTHS ago) being admitted seemed so far away (especially when I got my first rejection letter). So for those still waiting do your best not feel discouraged! I know from experience that it's tough sometimes, but try to remember sometimes the plans we make for ourselves are not the plans we're meant to follow. So keep your fingers crossed, there's still hope for you guys!! :)

You can go to the group page on facebook, search for "USF CNL Cohort 16"

or you could PM me on here or through the email I provided in my other post and I'll try to add you myself.

@lolibear and @Madrid.navarro2sad8i. Yes, I don't even think I had to deal with the financial aid office. The directions were clear enough, that I just did everything online. I relocated from out of state for the program, so I ended up coming to San Francisco for a weekend, looked at a bunch of rooms for rent, and committed to a place that weekend. It's stressful, and not a lot of time to do everything, but it's definitely do-able.

Any advice for anyone who is trying to apply for Spring 2014? :)

I still have not received any acceptance nor rejection. I hope usf lets everyone know this week.

I haven't either :/ hopefully this week.

which number have you guys been calling. i keep getting sent to a voice message.

@ haha09 - Advice... Don't compare grades, or stats, or volunteer experience. You'll made the choice to apply because at some point in time you thought you had what it takes to make that next step. So don't compare yourself to everyone else, the doubt will on occasion creep in on it's own (you're only human) so why help it out?! Also, it seems so obvious but everyone is different and it's easy to forget that during this process. For myself, I was a transfer student and I have always worked to pay my way through school. That in mind, there have been times when I simply could not do some of things other applicants have done, and I have gone crazy thinking that I wouldn't make it because of this. So bottom line, even when it's hard, try not to compare yourself to others.

As far as all that other stuff goes this is what I've been told and found helpful:

SOP- Writing my SOP was stressful to me at first, and then one day I was talking to the NP at my office about it, and she asked why I wanted to get into nursing. So we talked at length until she said, why don't you just write that?! So, that's what I did. Everything that is written about in my statement is something I would want the interviewer to know if I could have a conversation with them. This might work for you, and it might not. All I know is that this is what worked for me :)

LORs- start early! Don't wait until the last minute to request your letters.

Volunteer Hours - find a way to work in a hospital/outpatient center/private practice where you get actual HANDS-ON time with patients. I mean hands-on like ambulating, feeding, bathing, cleaning up vomit :) Don't settle for passing magazines just because you can add hospital internship to your resume. People sometimes forget that nursing isn't always glamorous, and along with being a skilled healthcare provider you will also have to provide comfort care. So doing these things as a student/intern, where there is no compensation other than the experience itself, shows dedication.

Lastly, assume everyone is doing everything that you're doing. If you're doing an internship and there's an opportunity to do leadership within the program, do it. All of these applicants will have some kind of internship experience on their resume, so it will make a difference if your resume doesn't just say 'intern' but 'leader'.

Anyways, that's the stuff that I feel made a difference for me... Hope it's helpful :)

Has anyone gotten a response yet today?
