UCLA MECN vs. CSUN ABSN

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi everyone! I was accepted to both the MECN program at UCLA and the ABSN program at CSUN and I'm having a hard time making a decision on where to go! I know the pros and cons for each but if anyone out there has firsthand experience with either of the programs, I would really appreciate any advice.....thanks so much!

i have no experience.

but i would honestly pick UCLA.

with the job market it is already. I'm assuming UCLA MECN students will have clinicals at the hospitals within the UCLA health system. and also having a masters in this economy will set you apart from the ADNs, BSNs.

Whatever you decide, good luck on your journey.

and

Congratulations on getting accepted into two programs =)

I agree with bayarea. I am currently in my second year of the MECN program and I think the Masters degree alone makes it worth it in this job market. Even just to have a better shot at that first job. We are all in the process of applying now and it is VERY competitive and anything that you can put on your resume you are gonna want. In my opinion the extra time is well worth it. Not saying that the QUALITY of the education is any better or even as good, I just cant say because I don't know, but it LOOKS good on a resume.. anyway that is my opinion.

Honest question: Why would you want a Master's in anything other than in APN? (esp when you haven't worked as a nurse).

With a Master's, you'd be competing with the ADN's, BSN's, but not with the APN's.

(Of course, if you're a working ADN/BSN RN and want to go into management, then a Master's is the next logical step).

Why not just look at it in terms of time commitment: MECN vs. ABSN to MSN.

A subtle pro to MECN: hopefully the economy improves by the time you graduate.

An obvious pro to ABSN: get your RN quicker.

Hi,

I am in the same dilemma, a year later -- what did you decide, and are you happy with your decision?

Hello, what did you decide to do? I am interested in applying to an ABSN program in LA and also the MECN program at UCLA. I'm interested though in becoming a nurse practitioner. Can you give me some advice about the programs? I also have two small kids.
