I'm not usually the type to forage through online forums, but what can I say - grad school apps are stressing me out! This should get the ball rolling...

Hi Everyone!! I am really excited for all of you! I am perusing forums because I am trying to decide if the NP or RN route is best for me.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the difference is between the two. I understand the basic difference that NPs have more autonomy and may have the ability to write prescriptions. But both deal with patient care. Is wanting to have more authority really a good reason to become a NP? This reason doesn't seem to have much passion behind it.

I really want to grasp the full meaning of what being a NP really means before I make a decision about really going for it. I don't want to make this decision lightly. Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, you are right that both RN and NP focus on patient care, but NP is a very different role from RN because NP will have an additional role of treating disease for the patient on top of caring for patients. It is not about writing prescriptions, but how to treat and teach patient of disease prevention and health promotion. It is really your personal choice which route you want to pursue. You may want to shadow a RN and a NP to figure out because talking and describing the roles of RN and NP can not bring the whole picture of they do. Some people think that NP is really out of the RN role because NP really focus more on treating patients rather than caring for patients.

How were the interviews this weekend? Hope they all went well :)

Echoing what Alyssa said. I hope everyone had a great interview on 2/11. Was it intimidating? Was there an essay or writing prompt?

I'm just curious about how many people were at the interview last Saturday. How big of a group was it?

Hopefully it all went well for you all :)

Applicants are still being invited to FNP interviews. I received my invitation last night after 6pm. Keep holding out hope!

Congrats yay! What day is your interview?

Thanks for the encouragement yay456 :)

As yay456 mentioned, they are still contacting people for interviews for the FNP track. I got my email invitation today!! Don't lose hope and I look forward to meeting some of you on the 19th!

Hi everyone! I'm late to the party, but I applied to the 2013 FNP oakland track as well and just received my invitation to interview. I'll be in the 2/19 group at 1pm. Nerves have already started to kick up! Is anyone else going to be interviewing on the same day?

Hi marisapm! I'll be joining you at that time as well. Can't wait to meet you! Gotta calm these nerves and figure out what on earth the right type of "business casual" it is. haha!

Good luck everyone! I got invited to interview, but already confirmed my acceptance with another program, so hopefully that opens up one more potential spot :)

@doublescoop congratulations!!
