Sacramento RN wages??

U.S.A. California

Published

I am looking to relocate to Sacramento and I was trying to find out what a normal RN wage is. I have looked several places and found that they all vary tremendously. Can anyone tell me what a normal wage per hour would be for a Sacramento RN?

I do have 5 years of acute care experience.

Thanks!

You can see the salary range for UC Davis on their job listings. I also want to relocate and was offered a NICU travel assignment at UC Davis for 45/hr without housing. Its looking like travel assignments tend to pay less than staff positions in northern Cali. Im now considering just applying for a staff position in the Bay area.

Thanks for the reply. Cost of living isnt as high as San Francisco correct?

Correct. Housing and cost of living in General is cheaper than San Francisco / immediate Bay Area.

Specializes in Emergency, Trauma, Critical Care.

I relocated here last year to be closer to family. I have 4 years acute care experience. I make just shy of 50/hr. and I believe we pay lowest for the region based on interviews I had at other places. I stay for benefits. Other places pay more than that. that doesn't include nights/weekend differentials. I make almost 60/hr on weekend nights.

regrading cost of living, I rent a nice older home 3 bed/ 2 bath near the river on quarter acre with 2 fruit trees for 1150/ month. Safeish neighborhood. You have to watch for neighborhoods, there is pockets of safe areas here. And schools are better not directly in Sacramento if you have kids. I got my place after a lot of research, my friends pay 1300 for a more upgraded house. Most people I know prefer newer houses so rent could easily be 1400 month depending on what you want. I think it's definitely doable on that salary.

The hard part is getting a job here. You really need your bachelors, and you really need awesome experience to get noticed, and it helps to know someone. I had all of the above and it took 6 months to get an interview and get a job. :). You can pm me for more questions.

Thanks for the great info NickiLaughs! I was having a hard time deciding between Seattle/Tacoma and Sacramento. Being that I dont have my BSN yet, I think that I should go to Washington first to see how I like it and then after I get my BSN if I am unhappy there then I think I will try Sacramento. I dont know anyone in the Sacramento area at all. I would be so afraid of not finding a job.

Just a heads up. Seattle and Tacoma is also very saturated with nurses. Wherever you go just make sure you have a job before you move.

Thanks so much 4 that information! I'm still debating about the travel assignment turns out the pay is 24/hr + OT after 8, 288 tax free meal stipend (which I could get anyway when I file taxes), free housing & insurance. So it's supposedly "like 45$ an hr" & I'll bring home around 1000$/wk. If I was coming from somewhere with low pay and didn't plan to relocate maybe Id think it's ok but after researching pay in the area it looks like they would be pocketing a lot of money off of me & it's more beneficial to find a staff job. It seems like a lot of hospitals in Bay Area are looking for agency/travelers & if they like u u can go permanent so then I think maybe I should just take it to get my foot in the door. I would prefer to be in east bay though. I do have bachelors & 7 yrs exp 5in NICU so I decided to apply for a staff job in Antioch but I'm still debating.

I wouldn't be so quick to give up on California or Sacramento. Not all Sacramento area hospitals require a BSN, mine does not unless you are wanting to work in a high risk area, then you may find it's preferred. Our hospitals are members of the CNA union and the wages are quite good actually. You don't mention what specialty you're interested in. So, if you have not already made your final decision, check it out again. Best of luck to you!

Hi, @NickiLaughs! I tried sending you a PM but it says you've exceeded your PM quota. I'm hoping you can help me out. I recently interviewed for a new grad position at UC Davis and was informed I'm a top candidate...currently undergoing the reference check. I currently live in Los Angeles and the program starts on Feb. 24t so if offered a position, I have a lot of moving prep to do before! What areas would you recommend I look into? My budget is between $600-$1100 and I'm opened to renting a house or an apartment within a 30-minute commute to UC Davis? Is this a realistic expectation?

Thank you in advance for your help!

HI Ladyrn29! My partner and I are seriously condering the Sacramento area to relocate to from Seattle but have heard that state taxes are so high. Can you give me a rough guestimate on how much take home pay after taxes would be for an RN with 5 years of experience? Any info you provide would be greatly appreciated!

Well anywhere outside Washington where there isn't state taxes is gonna be high haha. On the top of my head my take home is about half. 15 percent went to retirement and 10% goes toward UC pension, both pretax
