Rio Hondo College ADN 2013

U.S.A. California

Published

Hey everyone, I'm getting ready to apply to Rio Hondo in a few weeks to meet the March 2013 deadline for ADN. I know their selection is based off of a point system, so I was hoping that most of you who have been accepted for the Spring 2013 class could post your stats, just to get an idea of where I stand. Also, they don't tell you at the info session but how many points did those who get accepted have?? Thanks!!

Specializes in Peds, Med-Surg, Disaster Nsg, Parish Nsg.
Specializes in ER, Trauma, Med-Surg/Tele, LTC.

Here's an old thread where some people that have been accepted into Rio within the last year have posted their stats that may help you in terms of gauging your general competitivity:

It seems someone got in with 30 points or so.

Does anyone know how Rio Hondo's point system works?

Would you mind posting your stats? I am also applying for Fall 2013 and I'm just curious to know who I'm competing with. My stats are - Science GPA: 3.6 (Anatomy A, Physio B, Micro A). Overall: 2.7 (Did horrible as an undergrad at UCLA but have a B.S. in Biology). Over one year experience in health care. 3rd level Spanish. Would love to know how many points we get in each category if anyone knows...

Hi there, yup no prob. Science GPA: 4.0, Overall 3.3 (taking winter course so it may go up...), B.A. in Criminal Justice from George Washington U. , fluent in Spanish (was my first language), "Need to work" during my prereqs (I have a mortgage, 2 kids, and bills, LOL), "First generation to go to college", so hopefully some points there...I am missing the healthcare experience piece of it. I am in a completely different field that pays very well, so for me to do something like get a CNA cert and get $10/hr is completely out of the question right now. I am busting my behind to pay off all my (smaller) debt and save some $$$ so that I can quit once I get into a program. :( Hopefully they'll take that into consideration!!! :/

Furball18,

Your stats look great! I wish we knew how many points we got for each category :/ I also needed to work during my pre-reqs, going to write a personal statement as well to add some points in there... Good luck to you!

Yours do as well! The fact that you have healthcare experience is worth tons!! I wish you good luck as well. For the "need to work " get your employer to write a short statement. Then in addition to that, you can write a personal statement re any hardship during your studies/life.

Hopefully we'll get in right away!! :)

Is/Has anyone sent their application by mail? I live in Northern California and I plan on moving to Los Angeles either for nursing school or after it. I just wonder if dropping my application off in person is worth the $200+ it would cost to come down for the weekend... while I'm trying to save for nursing school...

Okay just sent off my application and here are my official statistics:

Overall GPA: 3.1

Science GPA: 3.71 (A&P I&II: A, Micro B)

Non-Science Prerequisite GPA: 4.0

TEAS V Score: 86%

*Need to work during prerequisites

*Veteran w/ honorable discharge

Thankfully they take unofficial transcripts because I had to open mine from CSU, Sacramento to find out what my GPA/credits were!

I decided not to travel to LA to drop it off, so we'll see how that goes!

Hello!!! Im currently a second semester nursing student at rio hondo and these are the stats I had:

AA degree from Rio Hondo

3 semesters of Spanish at Rio Hondo

Anatomy=B

Physiology=B

Microbiology=B

100+ hours of volunteer work in the NICU at St. Jude Hospital

EMT license

CNA license

Letter of recommendation from one of my teachers

Letter of hard life experience (I made up something very exaggerated but hey)

and I also stuck in my Deans List Certificate from Rio Hondo

and i think thats it from what I can remember. So as you can see I wasn't an A student in my prerequisites so thank god for the point system!! I took a CNA class during the summer and started working and took the Rio Hondo EMT class during the fall while I was waiting for application time in the spring for the nursing program. I only volunteered 3 hrs a week at the hospital the whole time I did the prerequisites so it wasnt stressful or anything. It took a lot of planning ahead but it was all worth it when I got in first try! Best of luck to all of you!!! Hope to see you around campus!!!

That is awesome, Stunna! :) Would you happen to know the point system works or how many points are alloted for each category?

Did you take the ADN 151 class in the summer? I would love to know more about that and the timeline from your acceptance to orientation to the summer ADN 151 class! I am hoping to move to the LA area if accepted to RHC, but I am curious as to how much time I will have before the June ADN class starts! You're opinion would be helpful :D

I just saw that the RHC ADN website changed! Fancy! :)
