Pediatric Nursing Salaries in the Bay Area

U.S.A. California

Does anyone know if Pediatric nursing salaries are comparable to other hospital nursing salaries? Specifically, does anyone know the approximate salary ranges for Pediatric nurses (new grads) in the Bay Area? Children's Hospital Oakland, Stanford, UCSF, etc. Thanks!

Pediatric nurses are paid the same as a nurse of that experience in any other area. There is no premum pay for peds. Most of those hospitals are unionized and you are paid per years of experience and years at that facility. Specialty does not enter in to it.

Great, thanks for the response! I had actually heard from someone in one of my classes (I am finishing up nursing prerequisites) that Pediatric nurses make less money than other nurses. Smaller people=small salaries? :)However, everyone in my prerequisite courses seem to have answers for everything and yet no one knows where they got their answers from. I am delighted to have found this forum, complete with real, live nurses! What a great resource. Thanks again.

Hi, I worked at Children's Oakland for 16 years. It was a great experience, in the NICU. But, BEWARE. You will work all major holidays for years, I did for 16 years! And you will be on nights for a long time as well. I left to go to Kaiser so I could get a per diem job and actually have some holidays off. Also, Kaiser is more flexible with your schedule, and you have more of a chance of getting a shift other than nights. Also, they have a better retirement package.

Please look into Kaiser when you graduate!

Good luck!

So then by your friend's accounting, if you work NICU, you get even a smaller salary? Not going to happen, the stress in that unit can make up the difference with working in any adult unit.

All nurses get paid the same based on years of work in that facility, as well as years of experience as an RN. It does not change if one nurse works Med-Surg, and another works ICU. They each have different skill sets that they require. And if in the Emergency Dept, OR, PACU, salaries still the same based on the above.

i agree with the others posts. i work in the picu at stanford and peds RN get paid the same as anyone else in the hospital with the same number of yrs of experience and staff nurse level. bay area RNs are some of the highest paid in the country.

good luck to you and finishing school.
