Nursing Schools in Los Angeles - Prerequisites

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm planning on completing my prerequisites in LA (community college) and in the future to apply for a RN (Associate's Degree) program.

Does it really matter where I do my prerequisites at?

I have a list of schools, and any comments with regards to schools and the areas will be very much appreciated!

1. LA Harbor College

2. College of the Canyons

3. LA Valley College

4. El Camino Community College

5. Long Beach City College

6. Golden West College

7. Santa Ana College

8. Cerritos College

9. LA Pierce College

10. Santa Monica College

P.S. Is it easier to get into schools in Florida? Or pretty much the same?

Thank you and have a nice day!

there are some schools you should consider to apply too: Glendale, LA City College, LA trade-tech college,ELAC, LA southwest.

HARBOR, SOUTHWEST, LA CITY COLLEGE, LA VALLEY COLLEGE, GLENDALE, EAST LA COLLEGE, CERRITOS go by lottery.

SANTA MONICA (3-4 semesters waiting), LA TRADE-TECH(first come-first served), Santa ana (check back on 2014)

GOLDENWEST (Affected on 2013), SADDLE BACK, CYPRESS, LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE, EL CAMINO, MT. SAN ANOTIO, PASSADENA COLLEGE, RIO HONDO go by POINT SYSTEMS.

it depends on schools, pre-prequisites will be different. However, generally, Courses you do not want to miss are ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY, MICROBIOLOGY, ENGLISH, MATH (I took STATISTIC), INTRO PSYCHOLOGY, LIFESPAN PHYCHOLOGY, and INTRO CHEMISTRY.

Good luck

Thank you hnguyen509! Miami Dade College says they have 250 seats... And the applicants are usually around 1000... CA community colleges seem very hard to get in, is this right?

As far as pre-req's, you should look at each individual school because they all vary. Even among the LA Community College District.

Of course, the big 3 are Microbio, Anatomy, Physiology. But some require chem, others require psych, others want speech, so it really varies. You gotta take it one school at a time, unfortunately. But there should be enough cross over with only a few courses dangling in the fringes.

It does matter where you do prereq's. They prefer you do them in the LA area or they'll accept courses from the Cal State and UC system. But if you take classes in another state, they may want to see your course syllabus and the catalog from your school. I only mention this because I think you're in Florida and I'm not sure what classes you've already taken, if any.

The other thing to consider is that LA is huge and when you add in traffic, getting from point A to point B can be a headache and challenge. Especially if your clinical site is dozens of miles from home. But if you're flexible and you're willing to move closer to a school, it might be better for you.

Your best resource to find a school is to search the Board of Registered Nursing's site. They have a list of schools here: http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/rnprograms.shtml

Thank you willowita! I will check the site!
