A touchy subject-hmm maybe not. I start school in Fall and out of curiosity i was wondering what do nurses in California make??

CALLING ALL CALIFORNIA NURSES!!!!!!:nurse:

How much do you make and where at???

Thanks!

I'm in Southern Cali (LA)-Love it wouldn't change it for the world!!:redbeathe:redbeathe

It's not a touchy subject at all, in fact it's been discussed dozens of times on this board. You might have better luck on the California nursing board.

Here's one post https://allnurses.com/california-nurses/pay-differences-across-464060.html

Looks like you're in the low scale of wages compared to the rest of Cali.

Well, I don't work in California but I went to school there and have several friends who work there now. But first of all~ A little advice.......Do not go to nursing school because you will make good money. Nursing is the most stressful, exhausting (physically & emotionally) and disapointing thing I have ever done. If you do it for the money, I promise you, you will quit in your first year. Money will not get you through this roller coaster, regardless of how much. You have to love caring for your patients sooooo much that their little "thank you" makes it all worth while. The money will not do that for you long term. :twocents: But as far as I know in N. California. Kaiser RN's make about $46/hr to start, Mercy about $40/hr and Sutter and UC Davis, a little less. Good luck!

My answer to you is going to be similar to one that posted that it is about the care and concern, not about the money, but put in a different way. I am an LVN, the highest paid LVN, will not make the money that an entry level RN will make. When I bring my Med aide, CNA, and LVN, experience, it would make some RN's look in-experienced and therefore over paid. The satisfaction that my jobs had brought me, helping people, watching them get better and watching them die, cannot be replaced by money. I hope you really take that to heart, because if not, you may have a short and horrible carrier, but your patients may also suffer from it. Good luck.

22.22/hr base; 25.55 night diff. Northern California, hospital pay. Yeah, we are one of if not THE lowest hospital paid nurses in CA.

I find those "Salary" websites to be grossly inaccurate. According to this web-site, I do not even make what nurses in the 10th % make; I find the salarys they quote are at least twice as much as they really are.

Once in awhile, NurseADVANCE or NurseWeek will post regional salaries and the cost of living in their magazines. Companies (aka hospitals) will pay according to national measurements, competition, costs of living, etc. Also depends on the facility, if they have procedures/equipment that require specialized training, you may see a little increase in your wage compared to other facilities who don't offer speacialty treatment. Also, wages increase with years of experience. When I started, I made about 22/hr at a straight pay facility with evening and weekend differential.

Since you'll be starting as a new grad OP, I'll tell you new grad wages.

I work in the San Francisco bay area where new grads start between $45 and $50 an hour. When I was a new grad here I started at $56.66/hr on nights, which works out to about $106,000 a year before taxes.

The Sacramento area is $40 to $45, LA is $27 to $35, and the central valley usually falls between the two.

I would never want to work as a nurse in Los Angeles. The cost of living there is comparable to the bay area but RN's here make almost double what they do in LA.

Wages have been effectively lowered over the past three years in the LA area by many employers. I expect the lower wages to stay that way even when the economy improves. As long as one nurse agrees to work for low wages, employers will continue to offer low wages. There are plenty of nurses being produced in the LA area on a regular basis and the majority of them are willing to work for low pay just to have a job. Therefore the trend continues.

You couldn't have said it better. There are way too many people looking into nursing for the wrong reasons and it only ends in misery.
