CSUS Fall '11 Hopefuls....??

U.S.A. California

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone is/has applied to CSUS for Fall '11. If so, what are your points looking like? How did you do on the TEAS exam (pretty tough huh?) I want to compare info!!! :D

Best of luck to all of you! I am in my final semester of the Sac State nursing program, and it has been an amazing experience. I am so glad I decided to go for nursing (I'm a second bachelor's) and my education has been excellent. (Not that there aren't things I would like to see changed in the program, but nothing is perfect.)

mt2544 - Glad to hear that you think your education has been excellent!

If you had it to do over again, would you consider an ABSN program instead? I'm asking because I am also a 2nd bachelor's student, and besides the 2-year program at CSUS, I am also looking at Samuel Merritt's 1-year ABSN program. I think CSUS will be less stressful (at least I hope so), but getting done in 1 year definitely has some appeal. I'd love to hear what you think.

runningrn2be -

I had considered Samuel Merritt's ABSN program as well, and I am very, very glad I did not go that direction. I do not have a medical background, and the amount of knowledge that nurses are responsible for far exceeds my understanding of the profession before I entered nursing school.

I have learned so much in these four semesters, but there is so much left to know. If I had not had a summer and a couple winter breaks to think and assimilate and develop my ability to think critically as a nurse, I feel that I would be further behind than I am at this point. I used my vacation time to read, study, think and talk with classmates; I was lucky enough to get a nursing internship that started in the summer so I had some time to focus on the development of my clinical practice without being weighed down by schoolwork as well. Also, it's important to have the time to reconnect not only with yourself but with your family and friends. Nursing is an intimate, at times emotionally taxing, occupation and the nurse who has a good understanding of his or her own weaknesses and strengths will be in a much better position to provide high-quality care to a diverse patient population.

I am cherishing my time as a student, because this is when I really have the resources available to help me learn. I still feel I have the right to tell someone when I'm in over my head and need some guidance; I prefer to have those experiences now rather than later when I am out working as a nurse. (And of course I know that I will still have many of those experiences as a new grad, but going through it now is inching me ever closer to the point when I will be proficient.)

So I can say most definitively that I would not want to go back and do an accelerated program. Finishing earlier is certainly a temptation, but I think in my case it would have resulted in feeling (and being) less capable and competent as I approach graduation.

I imagine that the accelerated programs are best for those with some medical training. But of course, it's possible to make anything work and many people without prior experience are very successful with the accelerated programs. I would suggest trying to find someone who completed an accelerated program, and see what he or she thought of the experience.

And don't hesitate to ask if there is anything else you would like to know.:)

mt2544 - Thanks so much for the info!

I am an older student, and although I am a good student, it takes me a little longer to learn things. So, I think the Samuel Merritt program would be very challenging for me. Like you, I think I will appreciate winter and summer breaks to give myself time to review all that I will be learning.

I don't want to get ahead of myself - I have to wait to see I get into CSUS! But thanks so much for giving me some things to think about - it will help if I need to make a decision between the 2 programs.

I'm glad to hear that the Sac State program has been good for you. Best of luck in your last semester. How exciting!

I'm anxiously waiting on my admission decision for fall 2011 as well. I have a total of 73 points, with an 87.3 on the teas. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I get into sac state because it's seriously my dream school. I had an interview at long beach last week and it went really well. I'm just waiting on a final decision from them. They said I should know in about 2-3 weeks. Best of luck to you! Hopefully we will see each other in the program. :)

BrookeLoraine - Welcome to the rest of us anxiously waiting! Best of luck to you!!! :)

Thanks runningrn2be! Have you heard anything yet? or do you know how many applicants have applied this time?

BrookeLoraine - no, I haven't heard anything yet, and I don't know how many applicants have applied this semester. It would be nice to know! Unfortunately I don't think we will know anything until May.

I really hope they send out an email to update us on the number of applicants and when we will know for sure! Waiting is definitely the HARDEST part! hehe

Seriously! I think the stress of waiting on a decision is way worse than the stress I had when I was taking my A&P classes. lol

Hi everyone,

I had a question - couple weeks ago I received a letter saying I was admitted to Sac State (overall college, NOT the nursing school)....like you guys I haven't heard anything about nursing school admission decisions yet. Yet, from the letter it says that I have until May 1st to either accept or decline the offer. How can I make a decision on whether I will accept if I do not know whether I got into CSUS nursing program yet? Are any of you guys in this dilemma? Did you all also recieve such a letter? I can't just accept then decline if I am rejected from the BSN program b/c they want you to submit a non-refundable deposit when you accept.

I also interviewed at CSULB for their BSN program and am waiting to hear back from them. If I don't get into the CSUS BSN program, then I will probably want to chose another college where I was accepted as a nursing student. Are many of you No. Cal residents or Sac locals? Is CSUS your 1st choice school? I'm from So Cal myself. I don't know my score but I have 4.0 GPA, volunteer hours, 87 TEAS + one other supplement.

Anyone heard anything more about number of applicants or amount of students they are taking?
