U.S.A. California

Hey everyone so I have been waiting for a couple of years to finally have all of the pre-reqs done to be able to apply to nursing school. I am finally finished and am just waiting for CSULB-elmsn's program which will start in Fall 2011. I want to know who else is planning on applying so we can have each other to go through the process with and I'm not going to lie I would really like to see what the competition is like. Goodluck to everyone. I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

Hey Sam I hope you don't mind me asking but what were your science and General GPA?

this is only prereq GPA right? I just calculated that for the science prereq I have 3.61. Assuming they let me use Ochem II instead of Ochem I. Hopefully they look at my GPA and classes I took at that time, i had a difficult courseload, and opted to take the higher unit anat/phys classes...

for the general ed prereq gpa, i have a 3.85.

what about you?

Actually I have a little higher science GPA than you and a lot lower General if you get the same score I did on the TEAS ironically we will have the same score! :) Kind of funny. Good luck.

The science GPA is Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, and Microbiology.... when calculating make sure you calculate Micro as a 5 unit class... because that is what they do.

I have noticed that most schools count the last 60 semester units into the GPA... But reading the information for CSULB I see that they calculate the entire undergrad GPA... Am I right on this?

I'm under the impression that they look at your prerequisite science GPA and prerequisite general GPA. I could be wrong...

The only thing they care about is that you are have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in your undergraduate degree. They rate each of there applicants on a scale of 10. 4 points for science GPA (anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry) and 2 points for general gpa (english 101, critical thinking, math, oral communication) 2 points for your overall score on the TEAS and 2 points for your score on the math portion of the TEAS. You can look on their website and see what last year's cohort and the year before that scored. Last year the cutoff was 9.15 and the year before it was 8.9

So if my total undergrad GPA is a 2.9, should I even bother applying? My jr/sr gpa and my science gpa is above 3.0, but I don't want to waste my money on the application or time on it if I don't even meet the minimum requirements... Does anyone know about this? If not I guess I will call and find out :)

Sorry Claudia but if your GPA is less than 3.0 I don't believe they will even look at your application, so don't waste your money. I can tell you too that the average science GPA last year was 3.76 and the average general was 3.65.. and average TEAS is 90 so it is really competitive to get in which is why they make it a requirement that you have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Good luck getting into a school.

Yeah I was afraid of that... There are plenty of schools that only look at your jr/sr gpa and mine is 3.4... And my science GPA is 3.3... Definitely not competitive but I could at least apply to schools where those are accepted and hope that my extracurricular activities and work experience make up for it. :)

Thanks for your help!!! And good luck to you as well :)

claudia- just curious...what other schools are you planning on applying to? good luck on apps : )

For master's programs, I'm applying to CSUF, CSULA, and UCLA... :)

I am also applying to the mt. st. mary's accelerated BSN program...

And, I am applying to the RN program at my local community college.

At this point I don't mind which one I get into, they all have their pro's and con's... I'm leaning towards either LA schools because a. they're local, b. they offer a master's, c. they're public... :)

nice, im applying to the same LA schools, plus three in SF area, and a couple out of state. all msn programs. so many apps...haha
