Azusa Pacific University 2011/2012 Applicants

U.S.A. California

Hello all,

I'm applying to APU's NP program this January and am sooo excited and nervous! I'm really trying to get accepted to start in Fall 2011 as I don't want to wait until spring 2012. This is my first choice (I've already applied to another school here) and I've GOT to get in! Is anybody out there waiting for decisions or has advice for the application process? I would've applied sooner, but they just implemented a rule where you have to have 12 completed credits for science, so I had to wait until grades got posted.

WOOHOO! CAN'T WAIT TO START!

Hello all--

I am the student kkandes is talking about when she says she is talking to a student :) I am in my 4th semester of the program at SD for APU ELM. I am happy to answer any questions you may have!! I remember stalking this blog looking for answers, so I figured I'd check this out again in case you had more questions! :specs:

Monruss13,

Thanks for offering to answer questions! How do you like the program in San Diego? Kkandes mentioned in a previous post that you mentioned your concerns and issues with the program. If you don't mind me asking, what are those issues?

Also, since you're in your fourth semester, do you feel that the program has prepared you for the NCLEX?

Thanks again!

Monruss13,

I have some questions in my mind and would appreciate If you help me with those. What is the actual cost of the first portion of the program? Is this true that we can leave the school after the first portion(BSc) and have time till 3 years to complete the Master part? How hard and tense is the program? Do you feel the graduates would have difficulty to find the job?

Thank you very much for helping us,

Lilfoot720-

I really like the program. As I told kkandes there are pros and cons, and I believe the "grass is always greener" once you finally chose a program. I like the small class size, all my professors know me... etc. Then again, I am assertive and I make it this way. Like kkandes I was choosing btw a big name school and APU. APU was the BEST choice for my husband and I. However that being said, it may not be the best choice for everyone. So I would definitely do a pro/con list and really think about what is best for you.

As for concerns, we just did not have a great Fundamentals or Med-Surg prof. Then again I have had amazing professors in other departments. I think this can happen anywhere. When i first got to the school, we had a different director, but now Janet Wessels is the director and she is amazing. She is turing the program around and I have only seen improvements since I have arrived. Issues are lack of organization and last minute changes. Those are very very frustrating but we have learned to roll with the punches.

As for NCLEX, we use the Kaplan course to prepare and I heard the cohort who just finished had a 100% pass rate. So I think it looks good :) every time I take a Kaplan practice test (which we have too after each course) I get better and better scores. so I hope it will work out!! :)

let me know if you have ANY other questions. happy to help :)

umm the cost... to be honest I haven't been keeping perfect track, but I think I pay about 8,000-9,000 per semester.

you are not supposed to leave after the first portion. This was the old program. The ELM is intended for everyone to stay and continue with your master's. you may take a leave of absence for certain situations (like pregnancy). Also you could take a semester off to start a new-grad program (which I will probably do). I will be working and doing the Master's at the same time. (once I find a job).

How hard? :lol2: well..... its pretty tough... but not impossible. I would say I study a LOT, every weekend and most days. I am however able to have some fun :) I still have date nights with my husband and go to the gym and church.. so its not impossible.

The graduates are having a harder time with jobs right now because of the job market in SD. however we had reps from SD hospitals tell us it is only improving and they are hopefully starting new grad programs this year. sooo we will see :) however I do know other people who have gotten jobs.. it just might not happen right away.

let me know if you have any other questions!

I got accepted into the Fall 2012 San Diego ELM Program. I am so excited I found this thread and see some fellow classmates. I would love to meet up and I requested to join the FB group. (Let me in! ;) ) I live in Oceanside and will be commuting to school everyday. Any other fellow North County-ers?

Hey thanks for offering your "services" to us. =]

I have a question about loans. Where you offered both the unsubsidized and the plus loans? For us, there are no more subsidized loans starting this year. =[. I'm trying to calculate how much it would be by the time school finishes. What is your understanding of this?

ummm i was offered subsidized the first year, but now I see what you are saying and there is no subsidized loan for this year. Um.. I honestly don't know much about FAFSA and loans and all that, I would call the Financial Aid office if you have more questions: 626-815-4570

Thanks. I'll check that out.

What are your thoughts on the book set? I heard that the school offer a set of books that we can purchase in the beginning that comes with other pluses like e-books and other online stuff. Do you recommend purchasing that? Or should be purchase our books separately through Amazon?

Allnurses lost a bunch of posts. Musingmom had posted on here looking for the FB page for the main campus cohort.

Chiflavored....how do we add her to the FB group? Does she need to friend one of us first?

Yep, I had to re-register and everything! :)

I'd love to get added to the main campus cohort for fall 2012 on facebook! I searched for it, but I can't find it. Looking forward to orientation!

APU ELM Main Campus Fall 2012 is the name of the FB group. Chi made it a private group, but you can request to join and I think she (as admin) needs to add you.
