Any Excelsior LVN to RN's out there?

U.S.A. California

Published

I am very interested in any input from those California RN's who bridged from LVN & achieved their degree through a distance learning program such as Excelsior.

Any info, suggestions, comments you care to share is greatly appreciated. For example, was it worth it, how much was your total cost, how long did it take you, once completed, could you sit immediatley for the licensing exam ?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

I am not a good spokesperson because I tried and found the need for deadlines. With kids at home and a full time job it would have taken forever.

I worked 24 hours a week, took out loans, and withdrew savings to attend a campus based program.

My fortune was that a wonderful professor was able to stress the psychological adjustment to the RN level of responsibility. As an LVN my responsibility was to report abnormal signs & symptoms to my supervising RN.

As RN you will be responsible by law for the entire nursing process including patient advocacy.

For the person with a lot of self discipline it may be the best choice.

SierraNurse,

Are you currently in California right now? I don't know if you realize this, but on Friday, September 12th, the SBON for California will be making a decision on whether to continue this program. If they make the decision on Friday to discontinue this, you will no longer be allowed to do this. So, if you're at all interested in doing Excelsior College and you live in California, you MUST enroll by Friday.

Let me know if I can help in any way. :)

Hmmmm.... Yes, I am in California currently. I recently heard something about the California Board considering some type of determination on this subject.

In this day & age of a nursing shortage that just makes a lot of sense doen't it? Typical of California politics right now. Let' s hope they don't stray down that avenue. For right now, disposable income for me is thin. Enrolling immediately would be out of the question.

Should it come to pass that the SBON does make such a decision I guess I'll go be a truck driver instead. What a loss that would be after 35 plus years in the medical field, eh? !

The enrollment fee into Excelsior can be broken down into monthly payments of $142 a month for about six months. However, once you start the enrollment process, you can apply for scholarships and loans. They also have payment programs and financing options to help with their fees.

If this decision goes through, the only other way for you to obtain your ASN degree would be to sit in a classroom. Trust me, I really hope that this CA thing will blow over!!!!

Thanks for the info, Christy!

I hope it blows over, too. I'm calling & emailing my congressional representative's right to voice my displeasure.

Here's waving crossed 2nd & 3rd digits at ya!

Be extremely careful- I don't know if the Excelsior program will be considered legit or not anymore and from a personal standpoint, we had a nurse who graduated from the RN program there and she got let go b/c she couldn't cut it @ work. It may be d/t NO clinical experience that is done in the program, I don't know, but if you are already an LVN and considering the program, you should be ok. Good Luck.
