Tuscon AZ nursing

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Currently I'm a nurse in So. Cal. My son has been accepted to U of A and I was thinking of getting a parttime/per diem job in Tuscon to eventually establish residency so he can get the in state tuition rate. My job now is parttime and very flexible, so I could definately work 3-6 days per month in AZ. I would be renting a place in the beginning and perhaps eventually buying a small place. My son would be living on campus. at least the first year. I would like to know what hospitals are closest to the U of A campus( walking distance would be a definate plus). I have quite a bit of hospital nursing experience, so I'm not too worried about picking up a job per diem or parttime. I would be maintaining my job in So. Cal. also. So what I need to know is the best hospitals near the U of A, pay is insignificant at this point because what I'm eventually going for is the instate residency to lower tuition( a 10k+ savings). Thanks.

AZ residency rules:

If a parent moves to the state of AZ, makes it abundantly clear they are here for the long haul (ie rental/property agreement, driver's license, voter registration, vehicles registered, etc), can prove they are the legal parent/guardian of the student (birth certificate, divorce decree, etc), begins paying az state taxs, and claimed the child on the previous year's taxes then the student is eligible for in-state tuition their first semester at AZ public university, regardless of time in state. It is a petitioning process and the burden of proof is on the petitioner.

However, only being here 3-6 days a month will make it impossible to ever set up residency here for yourself or your child; and in fact would made it even harder for your child to qualify for instate tuition on their own. For a child who is under the age of 24, it is darn near impossible for them to set up residency in AZ for instate tuition on their own. The details for that are very complex and case by case decided, contact UA's residency reclassification office for questions on that.

Either way: contact UA's residency reclassification office.

I used to work at ASU's residency reclassification office; all public universities in AZ operate under the same laws.

Thanks for the good info. I'll send my husband, he doesn't live with me and he doesn't work anyway. Let him do some good for the kid, lol. Besides if I went to AZ I would probably stay there more than half the month anyway.

I was surprised at the hoops I had to jump through at UA, proving my in-state residency. And I've lived here over twenty years.

I have lived in AZ for 20 years and the online application decided I was *not* an AZ resident. I was told that it was because a law passed last year made all the schools have to be very careful that only *legal* residents of the USA pay in-state tuition.

The other half of the question:

University of Arizona Medical Center is *on* the UA campus... Close enough? :)

Tuscon is small compared to almost anywhere in SoCal... Using Microsoft Streets and Trips with the center of a circle on the UMC there are 9 hospitals within 7.0 miles.

A few years back, Az made some crappy Driver's licenses' where the picture faded within a year or so. Dh had to get a new license so that we could travel (airlines refuse ID with faded picture). When we tried to establish residency, the local school refused the ID since it was recently issued. Then refused the pay stubs he had because didn't have a complete years worth on paper (computer pay stubs). Plus, we rented from a friend, and they wouldn't believe that either.

It took us weeks to establish residency here-we'd go and show them something else, and they'd refuse it. They really, really suck at believing you are a resident! Then didn't even believe the military ID!

It was easier buying a home!

Good luck!
