Pima CC Financial Aid Stress

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hey there everyone! Im so beyond frustrated right now with my financial aid! I applied for the Pell Grant via FAFSA last week and have been on pins and needles since. I got back an SAR of 858 on Thursday and called my school on Friday and they said they havent recieved it yet. I was told to wait until Monday and here I am. I have recieved these messages on MyPima throughout the day:

RequirementMessage

Admission as a regular student;

You must be admitted to Pima Community College as a Regular student if you would like to be considered for Federal student aid. A Regular student is one who has a high school diploma or GED, or is beyond the age of compulsory attendance and has passed the ability to benefit test at Pima Community College. If you were home-schooled please provide a copy of your state issued certification to Pima. To resolve this issue, please contact Admissions and Registration at 206-4640.

Admitted to a program eligible for financial aid:

Our records indicate that you have selected a program of study at Pima Community College that is ineligible for Federal Aid. If you feel that there is an error, please contact Admissions and Registration for clarification. If this is accurate, please be advised that your file will be closed after 30 days. You may contact [email protected] or a campus financial aid office for clarification.

Federal Student Financial Aid Application (FAFSA):

Because of incomplete information, the Department of Education was unable to complete the processing of your application for Federal financial aid. Please review the Student Aid Report sent to you by the Department of Education to determine what items need to be corrected, then log-in to www.fafsa.ed.gov to make corrections.

Im a regular student and in a Liberal Arts Program while I am waiting to get into the nursing program. Also, FAFSA said I have no requirements, thats where the frustration lies. I've called three times (everytime a new message pops) and am told to wait it out until the end of the week...but it is soooo hard when I am seeing all these reasons Im "ineligible" before then. I need the aid so I can finish the rest of my co-reqs while I am waiting to start nursing school in August, I just cannot pay for it on my own. Has anyone from Pima had this problem, or any other program for that matter!? Maybe I'm just a little high strung

I was there last semester. Financial aid is a whole new thing for me. One of the sticking points was the program ineligable status. You need to go talk to an advisor and have them switch your program of study to an Associates of Science. That is what you will end up with in the nursing program. I got stuck there too. There are a lot of 'majors' that don't qualify.

It sounds like you need to check your info at mypima or the advisor and get all of your information straightened out. If it doesn't match FAFSA, it throws red flags at you.

Good luck!

I am a Pima CC student under the associates for liberal arts too. I am on the wait list for nursing program too. I have had no problems with my financial aid, thank goodness. When you fill out your FAFSA I didn't know you could specifically apply for the Pell Grant.....I thought you just applied for aid, whatever you could qualify for......

I thought FAFSA applications had to be turned in during the spring for the following school year so turn in March 2009 for the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 terms, so are there problems with your application because it is so late in the year? Have you found your major listed in MyPima to confirm you are in fact a liberal arts major?

My best advice would be to go into a campus financial aid office to actually talk to someone face to face. You would probably get lame/vague answers over the phone. Please let us know how it turns out....GL

Hey guys! Thanks so much for writing back. As of yesterday, I only have one more outstanding requirement- Being registered...considering Im registered for 3 classes in the Spring of 2010, I think it will resolve itself.

Denaa- I didn't specifically apply for the Pell-but that is what I was praying I would get! On my SAR it said I should recieve "up-to" $4500. MY application is very late, although the Spring disbursements haven't been given out so as long as it is done before then...I think it should come through. I am a Liberal Arts major and my advisor told me to put this down until in nursing school...but that was in 2004 lol...maybe I should talk to someone...although, that issue has seemed to resolve itself. When are you starting Nursing Scool Denaa? I'm :::crossing fingers::: it's in Spring of 2010, it would be great to know someone! Thanks for the advice, and if it isn't right by Friday, you better believe my butt is going to be in the FA office!

Good to hear all is cleared/clearing up. I haven't started NS yet, I applied Oct 2009 and got seated for Fall 2012. I hope I am not waiting 3 years.....I have 3 more co-reqs also to do in Spring 2010 then I am done but for the nursing core. Have you already been seated to start NS in the spring? If so, I am soooooooooo jealous. :) I was also told to list liberal arts as my major in 2008 when I started my pre-reqs so that info still seems to be correct. I know the Pell grants are the first monies to be awarded each year so I bet all that money is gone, hopefully you can get a sub/unsub loan for the spring..

Just called them again and apparently my FA is held up because I'm a "special" student. LOL, not really, they didn't have my graduation year from HS! I hope they wont find out anything else "wrong". And, I do really hope I get FA even though it is late in the year. I was going to wait to do my co-reqs but then I decided I probably couldn't handle the extra workload. So, I went to the dr. got on my ADD meds again and applied for FAFSA :D Im starting in Fall of 2010 or THIS August. Please please, check your Pima e-mail while your waiting, they offered me a spot in Fall of 09 and I missed it because I wasn't checking my Pima mail, blah!!!

Hey!

I am starting my PreReqs at PCC this Spring- and i just applied for FAFSA at the beginning of the month and I was approved for 1800.00 in pell Grants- plus i was approved for certain amounts of subsidized and unsub federal loans (which I wont take unless ultimately neccessary)

So i'm thinking you should be able to get some Aid still. :)

I have been thinking of going to PMI for nursing- but I have to get my prereqs out of the way. I figured while i do that I would get my requirements out of the way for PCC and apply for the Nursing program- then see where i end up on the waiting list. I would so much rather go to PCC then pay 40K for PMI but we shall see.....

If I need too i'll go the PMI route. But I'm going to try to do really well in my classes at PCC and hopefully i can get into the nursing program sooner then later.

Jazzysmama,

Congratulations on starting NS this fall. I quickly checked my pima email after reading your post. Can I please know when did you apply for the program the first time? ( how long was the wait for you?). Also, I'm soooo happy for you as you are about to start NS. Please let us know about the NS when you start. You must be super excited. I'm on the waiting list 2 more years to go. :(

Do you know anything about the color of the school uniforms. I know it is silly to ask this but I'm so curious about everything in NS.

Good luck and thank you in advance.

Anirap

I applied in December of 08 or early January 09. Keep checking your pima email, you should only be waiting for about a year :) I believe that the school uniforms are green, but that is just what I heard  better than the see-through white everyone talks about :D You can PM me with your email and I will let you know how orientation goes and the info I learn
