For those placed in the Spring 14 cohorts, have any of you received orientation packets yet? Or do you know when your school will be sending them out? There is a decent amount of cost in all that needs to be purchased and completed by orientation, so I'm hoping to get the details on what and where things should be purchased from. I already did my background check, and am signed up for a BLS CPR class, and I know where to purchase the uniform scrubs from, but am waiting to get the packet before I do. Ugh. We wait 2+ years just to get placed, and this 3 month wait to start seems even worse lol.

You get them at apparel pro in tempe. Their website is apparelprousa.com. The pants range from $18-24 and have a couple different styles. The tops are like $18 I think. And the jacket (optional) is $27. They sell stethoscopes, penlights, watches, shoes, etc there as well. I ordered my stethoscope through medisave.net because engraving was free and shipping was free. The only thing in my orientation packet was info on the health requirements, background check, and dates for SCC registration session, where we will get our schedules and the rest of the program info. I actually found out what we need from prev posts on this site and started purchasing because its a lot of stuff and expensive total so its easier to spread it out.

Also if you need the health info stuff it is on the nursing.maricopa.edu site under CURRENT nursing students. You should get started on that right away. I had all my childhood vax and had chicken pox. I thought I would just need titers and be fine (no records of my vax). My MMR titer came back equivocal for both measles and mumps, but everything else was fine. GRR. Now I have to get the MMR series and you have to get 2 shots 4 weeks apart.

Here is a list of what I have gathered from my orientation packet, and from searching on here for recent students lists.

*Two sets uniforms from apparel pro

*Stethoscope (can get a cheap one but from reviews it is better to spend a bit more. I got a Littmann Classic II S.E. for about $75)

*All white shoes, non porous, can be clogs if have a heel or heel strap

*Pen light

*Watch w/second timer

*Health/Vax stuff

*Books (not available for my program yet, but cheaper purchased online since it will be a little over $1000 in the bookstores)

*Lab tote - purchased in bookstore or at orientation right before class starts

* AHA HCP BLS CPR cert that does not expire in first semester

*Level one figerprint clearance that does not expire in first semester

*Drug Screen (will be given a time frame from nursing coordinators at some point. You will not be given advance notice)

The health screen, vax info, CPR cert, background check, and fingerprint card all have to be complete before you can register for classes. If you need to get a vax series, you need to have the first shot of each series complete before you can register for classes, and have to complete the series withing the time frame listed for each vax or you get dropped. The HepB take 3 rounds and about 6 mos. Just a heads up.

Also they will require a flu shot, but it is not required before registration, but is required before you start clinicals so yo may as well get that out of the way as well.

I think I hit all the main points for anyone who hasn't received the packet yet. Def get started on the health stuff so that doesnt become your reason for not getting to start. Ad I believe if you dont get a chance to purchase your scrubs, they will have the vendor bring a bunch to orientation for purchase.

Thanks for all the information!

I'm at SCC and my packet didn't say anything about the uniforms or supplies. Am I missing a page?

No worries, you didnt miss anything. The list above and the info about the uniform I compiled from various threads on this site. I got overexcited and was offered money for school stuff by family members, so I searched out on this site what was needed in the past. I should add a disclaimer that of course any of that list could be subject to change so purchase at your own risk. From what I have found, the uniforms and basic supplies have not changed over the last few years, but of course that doesnt meant that cant.

I'm in the RN program at Gateway currently and we weren't even told about uniforms till school started cuz you don't even need to wear your scrubs till several weeks in in block 1. In terms of supplies, you need a stethoscope, watch with a second hand and then you'll purchase a tote with more supplies that you use in all 4 blocks

Do you know if the various programs have different ways of running things a bit? SCC had a registration meeting a week ago where they gave us the rest of the info we needed for what has to be done and purchased before orientation. They told us we would need our scrubs by the first lab day and will have to wear them on all lab and clinical days. Does Gateway only have you wear the scrubs when clinicals start a few weeks in, and do you get to just wear regular clothes to lab? Just curious. Also the info might help any future Gateway students who find this thread.

Oh, and twash10, what is in the lab kit we have to buy? Many people mention that we have to buy it, but not whats in it.

mrsboots87- So I bought my nursing tote today and it consists of the stuff I believe we will need for lab. IV starting kits, lab draw stuff, sample cups, ppe stuff. All that good stuff. The bookstore is super helpful at Gateway. They said they should have the book bundles in next week and the nursing diagnosis handbook soon also. They had the other 2 books.
