Hospital Reputations in Phoenix

U.S.A. Arizona

I am curious to hear from other nurses on what hospitals have great images and possibly what hospitals need to a reputation overhaul!

Thanks

I did my clinicals for NS (Block 1) at Carl T Hayden VAMC and it was a great experience. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. What the VA doesn't spend on beautifying the place, they make up for in technology and staff. There were so many staff that we were falling all over each other. No joke. My fellow students and I were approached multiple times asking us "when are you coming to join us?". There wasn't one person that didn't enjoy working there (at least that we came in contact with). The people there were helpful, almost anxious to tell us what they do and to show us things. It was exciting. Besides all that, the VETs were awesome! Most of the patients were men but we had a few women. Most were WWII vets and some were from Viet Nam era, a few from Desert Storm. It was a great experience and it will be really hard to say "no" to a job offer there.

i definitely did not enjoy the VA.

the staff was terrible and seemed very incompetent (and rude to patients, eachother, us, etc). it was my first clinical in nursing school and by far the absolute worst up to this point. seriously, i still have nightmares about their lack of standard precautions, contact precautions or droplet precautions to this day. BLEHHHHH.

I've not heard good things about Banner Baywood. Have a family member who worked there a few years. Very high turnover (I hear their ER had a near complete turnover), lots of people leaving there lately for significantly better pay, benefits, and treatment at a new hospital opening up nearby.

On a patient level, for many reasons I've never been impressed with them. If I had to be hospitalized I'd drive on down to Banner Desert or anywhere else but there.

But.......I've not even started prereqs for nursing yet, and haven't worked at any hospital, so take anything I have to say with a grain of salt, lol.

Most VA have that kind of reputation. Most hospitals do too. You will hear opinions of such from most nurses too. Overall, nurses are burnt out. It is best to get the experience you need to prepare you. Be a sponge, absorb what you can, and retain the good learning experiences and learn from the bad ones. Don't let yourself get comfortable in one setting or in one hospital for a long time. Once you've made it. Start out for a year or two in the hospital you've chosen, then do travel nursing or registry/agency nursing. That way you'll make yourself more marketable and you'll be able to decide where you'll establish residency. Goodluck to you.

i am a student working at a banner facility in the east valley. i have seen good and bad nurses but, coming from a manufacturing environment to this hospital has been an absolute joy. i have always believed that attitudes come from the top down and my facility seems to take that seriously. i suspect that they have made some big changes in the last few years.

i must say that even though john c. lincoln is a magnet hospital, i was disgusted with the quality of care my father received there.

i highly recommend checking out the banner facilities. :heartbeat

for it being a magnet facility, i was surprised how the actions of the staff at banner good sam contradicted them telling me they wanted me to succeed there. four nurses in my orientation class at another facility also had bad things to say about lack of support. for needing staff so badly, i'm amazed at how they won't support newcomers.

When no one will teach you things and nit-pick behind your back for things they do themselves, tell you you're doing well if not better than they at the same point in learning ICu, then have to worry about losing your job because you don't know how to run your first crashing patient yourself and can't identify a rhythm people who have been there several years can't, you get pushed (literally) by a preceptor cause she wanted to be at the head of the bed in trasport, have no say so in your assignments or precptors...yes. This goes against magnet criteria. I had to spend a lot of my own money to move for that job, much more than their moving allowance but was happy to do so when I thought I would get proper training.

I personally really love how welcome I am at Scottsdale. They're a nice non-profit hospital. Are you a new grad? What area are you interested in?
