Chemistry 130 advice

I am taking Chemistry 130 at Gateway in the Fall. I have heard that the instructor I have is really tough. If you have taken this class (doesnt have to be at gateway) let me know what might help me be successful. I am worried that I need to be good at math and that there will be a lot of algebra type formulas. I have not taken a math class in forever and have not taken a chemistry class ever. So any advice would help. If you are enrolled in the Monday Wednesday evening class, let me know.

The best thing you can do with chemistry is study about 45 minutes to an hour each night and then a couple hours each day on the weekend. The regular repetition will help you to remember math procedures and other data.

I took CHM151 rather than CHM130 and did very well by doing the above (top grade in my class).

P.S.

Do the questions at the end of the chapters (and read them thoroughly).

It had been a looong time since I'd studied math or chemistry. I had to get a waiver as I did not have the prerequisite for the class (CHM130).

You can do it. You might have to put in a lot of time, but it will be well worth it. In the past, I had taken CHM in high school and disliked it. I was afraid I wouldn't like it as I would have difficulty, too. I studied really hard (in the beginning because I was terrified, and in the end as I grew to enjoy it so much) and it paid off with a good grade --and also with knowledge that is more integrated in my brain. (In years past, I didn't study much. I also think I didn't gain as much.) My basic CHM knowledge has left me with a hunger for more. It also helps me to better understand other subject areas, e.g., A&P, pharmacy, etc.

Sorry my note to you is so disjointed. I am really tired. I also think it made a difference that I bought the study guide and used it.

I took it at Glendale this summer (5 wks) and it was really easy. I studied 2-3 hours before each test and always got well above 90% on my tests. I never liked chemistry. Don't be scared. You have some basic formulas that you have to use and that's it. I think the main thing, when working on problems, is to know what are they asking (which formula you need to use).

would you mind PMing and letting me know what teacher you had? I take classes at GCC.
