JPN RN wants to get a RN/LVN licence in the U.S.

World Registration

Published

Hello all,

I am an international student in the U.S. I graduated from 3 years nursing school and have RN license in Japan. I came to the U.S. California four years ago to become RN, but still I cannot join RN nursing course in college because I need to take all pre-required courses. I took all pre-required courses for LVN course, but there is a big waiting list and I am not sure when I can get in that course too.

Currently, I am looking for a state which allows nurses who graduated from other country's nursing school take NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN. I have a SSN, but my visa is still student visa.

If you have any information, please let me know.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Thank you,

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

There are many states that accept international RN training only CA have one of the strictest requirements and that even works for people registering in other states. The issue I can see happening is if you are looking for a employer is finding one willing to wait over 6 years for you to be able to work. Are you willing to leave the US whilst waiting?

Thank you Silverdragon for your response,

I got married to American citizen but am still waiting for my green card.

While I am waiting the green card, I want to take NCLEX-RN if I can take it in other states.

So, I will be ready to work when I get the green card even though I need to work in another state(out of California).

Thank you,

Jun

Hi Jun,

If you are RN in Japan, can't you just take NClex? My friend has BSN from Philippine, and took the board without going back to nursing school.

Below is from http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/applicants/exam-app.pdf

For International Graduates:

  1. A.) Send Breakdown of Educational Program for International Nursing Programs form toyour school with the Request for Transcript form. Also, provide the Certified EnglishTranslation form to your certified translator if your transcript is not in English. (SeeSupplemental Application Instructions for International Graduates.)

  2. B.) Submit a copy of your license or diploma that allows you to practice professional nursing inthe country where you were educated. Also, provide copies of your certificates for midwiferyand psychiatric nursing, if applicable.

Hope this help. Good luck

Thank you for your reply Willow,

My friend who graduated from 4 years nursing school in China asked CA nursing board that if she can take NCLEX-RN. But they said to her they require all applicants to get bed side education in every semester in nursing school, so they denied her application. I graduated from 3 years nursing school in Japan, and did not have bed side education in every semester. So, I am assuming that they will deny my application like my friend's case.

Thank you,

Jun

Jun,

I would not assume anything if I were you. It'll be at least another 3 years if you need to go through nursing program. It'll be a lots of money and time. And nursing school here is brutal. My friend who has RN from Japan and work here told me Japanese nursing school seems easier. Anyways, it won't hurt to ask;)

Best,

Yanagi

Thank you for your reply Willow,

Yeah, I will contact with Nursing Board as soon as possible. Going to nursing school again sounds wasting a lot of money and time;(

Thank you,

Jun
