U.S.A. Michigan

Looking to move to the area and have no clue what the East,West,North,or South side neighborhoods are like. Any suggestions as to safe areas with good schools? advice of places to avoid. Thanks Y'All.:nono:

Are you limiting yourself to Ypsilanti when you say East/North/West/South, or are you referring to those areas outside of Ypsi? I live in Belleville which is just east of Ypsi. For schools do you mean for your children, or for yourself? Are you already a nurse looking for employment?

Hi Cheska-rn2be

actually near AA is the goal and good neighborhood to raise kids and schools for the same.

thanks

I would definitely look more towards Ann Arbor than Ypsilanti. I grew up in Belleville and I work leasing in Ann Arbor on the border of Ypsilanti, and I would not recommend Ypsi schools. Ann Arbor schools are good, or Saline is not too far either and pretty much all of Saline in good :)

there are only 2 areas of Ypsi I could recommend: the cluster of houses immediately south of EMU (one of these clusters is student housing, which you may want to avoid due to noise issues. The other cluster is known as the Normal Park neighborhood and is pretty safe and decent, with very little student housing) or anywhere NOT on the bus line. If you go to far northern or southern Ypsilanti where the buses no longer run, it's a lot safer. avoid every single apartment complex, they are horrible, especially the area immediately north of EMU and the apartments on golfside road.

if you want good schools, move to Ann Arbor...it's more expensive, though.

Personally, since AA and Saline are both "spittin' distance" from anywhere in Ypsilanti as far as a work commute, I would avoid Ypsi altogether. Saline is a wonderful, "all American" kind of family friendly town, and AA is infinitely better than Ypsi in pretty much every way. Unless you have to live in Ypsi, you can definitely do better within a relatively small radius.

Dependent upon where you are working there are many nice communities in the greater AA area. So if you don't mind a commute look north, west, and south. If you prefer to live in the "country" you can go a bit further from the "urban" areas and find nice homes that are reasonably rural. Mostly it depends upon what type of commute you are willing to take on.

I lived about 30 miles south of Ypsi/AA and had 5 acres of beautiful property with a large home. In many of the areas to the north and west and down into Lenawee county you will find more waterfront property. The Irish Hills is a nice area, and to the north of that is Chelsea, also nice.

The greater AA/Ypsi areas have been hard hit by the recession and there have been many home foreclosures, so it may be easier to find affordable housing. As stated before, AA and Saline are a bit more expensive, but both are very nice communities with excellent schools. The presence of the U of M deeply enriches the surrounding communities and there are lots of things to do all year round in the area.

Good luck.

No.....!!! Run from Ypsi. If you absolutely have to live there, I would look into the Lincoln area. Ypsilanti Public schools suck!! I agree with some of the other posters, you should check out Saline and Ann Arbor.
