YouTube Nurses and Nursing Students. My Top 10 List.
Like many others, I have benefited from Youtube both as a Nursing student and as a RN. It has helped me to better understand ABG's (Arterial Blood Gasses), prepare for interviews, and deal with professional challenges such as time management. I have benefited from Youtube both as a Nursing student and as a RN. It has helped me to better understand ABG's (Arterial Blood Gasses), prepare for interviews, and deal with professional challenges such as time management. User discretion is advised however, whether one is posting videos or watching them it is important to respect HIPAA laws. Youtube may also be a great studying tool but it's vital to make sure the information provided is in fact correct by cross referencing and/or asking a Professor in your Nursing program.
With so many videos available, I decided to analyze current Youtube channels related to nursing. I used factors like quality of content, ratings and view count to help me choose which channels to feature in this article. So without further ado, here is my "Top 10 list" of Youtube Nurses/Nursing students for your consideration....
1. NurseMendoza
With 10,475 subscribers to date, Nurse Mendoza's videos are some of the first that pop up when searching Youtube for nurse related content. He currently has 43 videos featured on his channel. My personal favorites are "Popular Nursing Interview Q:A's" and "Nurse Scrub Fits" where he show cases his nursing outfits along with matching G-shock watches and sneakers. He has collaborated with another male nurse to create a new Youtube channel named "NurseBrothers" which already has seven videos including "Chest Pain Interventions". Definitely worth checking out
2. Nurse Nacole
With 8,942 subscribers and 180 videos, Nurse Nacole's channel serves as a great resource with lots to offer both Nurses and nursing students. She shares personal advice on subjects like how to balance marriage and nursing school, as well as "How to Reduce Nursing Burn Out". Her videos are short, sweet and to the point.
3. Michael Linares
This channel has a whopping 25,324 subscribers and an impressive 359 videos covering an array of educational nursing topics. I have watched many of these videos during nursing school and even after licensure to help me brush up on medications that are commonly found on pharmacology exams given by potential employers (e.g. "Diabetes Medication"). I would also like to recommend his EKG related videos.
4. Heather Elissa
This Youtuber has 5,118 subscribers and 145 videos. Her videos are down to Earth with a pinch of humor. A practicing RN, Heather Elissa talks about basic concerns providing tips such as how to set up IV, how to conquer shyness around patients, and "Working Holidays In The Hospital". I would also recommend her video titled "Nursing Experiences: Funny Encounters With A Difficult Patient" for a good laugh.
5. EmpoweRN
With 5,582 subscribers and 65 videos I personally found EmpoweRN's channel to be positive and motivating. One of my favorite videos from this Youtuber is "New Nurse? How to Ace the NURSE INTERVIEW!!!" In this video she gives good advice including how to relate non-nursing job experiences to nursing. Her video titled "My Daily Routine!" gives viewers an idea of how she efficiently manages/organizes nursing duties throughout the day. EmpoweRN's channel is all about empowering nurses!
6. Heatherheartsnursing
This channel has 2,900 subscribers and 46 videos. What's unique about this channel is that the Youtuber graduated a LVN program (worked as a LVN for a year) and is in a ADN RN program now. She describes some of the differences between the professions in her video titled "RN program update! Why I did LVN first, differences between LVN/RN programs". Another informative video from this channel is "Top 10 Things I've learned in my first year as a new nurse." Many pearls of wisdom here!
7. Hawknurse
Hawknurse has 10,722 subscribers and 41 videos. The creator of this educational channel states that she holds a "masters of science degree in nursing..." This channel has been up for approximately 5 years! The videos cover an array of nursing interventions ranging from "Making an Occupied Bed" to "Advanced Physical Assessment". This is a great resource. These videos helped to boost my confidence as a student Nurse, allowing me to feel more confident in clinical classes.
8. Permission ToBe U
This channel has 661 subscribers and 36 videos. Nurse Awesome (as the Youtuber likes to call herself) is a practicing RN who works in the ICU. I found this channel to have a therapeutic vibe, the videos are soft spoken and informative. I also appreciate how the Nursing Process is utilized in multiple videos including "Nurse awesome-Use the Nursing Process to Study" and "Nurse Awesome-Using ADPIE to study Pain Mgmt".
9. HeyRona
This channel has 6,700 subscribers and 24 videos. This channel was created by a young nursing student. She gives great study tips including honest advice about overzealous flash card making. HeyRona also takes us on a "Medical Mission trip to Nicaragua" where she states "Our hearts have been forever changed through this trip"...Gandhi said it best, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." What an inspiration to young nursing students!
10. ThePatriotNurse
With 68,569 and 170 videos, I found this channel to be the most controversial from my list. I learned of ThePatriotNurse after being shown a video titled "Why This Nurse WON'T Vaccinate" which is no longer available on her channel. A practicing RN, ThePatriotNurse describes her channel as consisting of "No- Nonsense, Straight talk about Medical Prepping for SHTF and everyday stuff too." This channel has a lot of non nursing related content as well including advice on widowhood and how to pick good salt.
