Nursing Students Pre-Nursing
Published Jan 21, 2007
I'm looking into Masters Entry programs, and have a friend who is currently receiving her BSN in an accelerated program. Apparently they have to practice injections and IVs on each other! Is this true of all nursing programs? Ack!

We practiced IV's on each other and I think only one person in my class refused. It was not mandatory that we be a guinnea pig. We had brand new "arms" to practice on but though they're great for practicing angle, taping, or whatever, going through skin and vein is very different. I felt like a human pincushion for a couple of weeks but I was greatful that I was able to do stick on people before doing it in a clinical setting on a patient that is already probably stressed.

If I have a choice at all, I will decline. I do not want anyone who doesnt know what they are doing poking on me.I was pretty proud though. When I went to have blood drawn, I watched the needle go in and the blood drain out, and I didnt pass out. I have always had a fear of needles, so I wasnt sure I could do it, but I did. :monkeydance: If I can watch it in my own arm, I think I will be able to watch on someone elses arm, and even do it myself... as a nurse that is. Like I said, if I have any choice at all, it will be done on a dummy.

Let me start by saying that your caramel macchiato (sp?) frappuccino is making me crave Starbucks (okay severe starbucks addict here) LOL, and also I just had my TB tests done and we have to get the 2-step and both times for the first time I watched myself get poked....it wasn't so bad after all!! I was also impressed with myself. Isn't it strange what happens on your way to nursedom?
