5 year old with joint ...

Published

Hello,

My daughter is 5 and had been complaining of back aches at least once a week for about 10 months.( daughter still slept in my bed so dr. thought this may have been the cause) We saw her doctor when they began, she had us keep tract of them. Back aches often were accompanied with stomach aches also. Like I said this continued on and she began to have leg pains more often then the back aches (once in awhile now she will complain of a backache) . She also would spike 102 -103 fevers at night and would feel fine by morning. Pcp has done blood work and found that her sed rate was up and ana had false postive. Drs say that the rates are not high just alittle higher than normal, and that her sed rate may just normally be higher. Will check sed again when she spikes another fever to compare sick rate to healthy rate. Pcp also sent her to a ortho doc and he did xrays and examined her on 2 occasions and found nothing. Ortho dr also sent her for a bone scan and found nothing. next Pcp sent her to a rhemetologist (sp?). He examined her and said the reason for her pain is because she is very double jointed and she is over extending her tendons. She is on naproxin 2x a day. All said we will have her blood done when she is sick , but she just keeps having these joint pains and stomach aches and I am worried that it is more than just being double jointed. Have any of you ever seen this or anything similar?

Don't stop pursuing this. I can't see how the fevers can be related to being double jointed. Having oncology experience, I"ve heard many a story starting out with leg/joint/back pain and/or fever.

When I first read your thread..5 yr old with joint...I thought....man that is way too young for drugs..and starting thinking how bad things have gotten in our society! I can't put any of the pieces together for you..it baffles me, but like the other posters said...keep gong back, and get as many referrals as you need, until someone can help. I would also like to ad that I am sorry your daughter and yourself are going through this. As a mom, I know how it tears at our hearts when our child is in pain. Hang in there.

How did they determine the ANA was false-positive?

How high was her sed rate?

Is there a pediatric rheumatologist you can see?

Is your daughter still having fevers?

I know you are concerned, listern to your gut feelings....

My daughters sed rate was around 60 the first time they took it and then around 40 the second time. The drs told me it was still considered low. The dr said that when they did the ana the blood test came back postive and then they did another test on the same blood sample and it came back negative. But they said that even the positive result was so borderline and that was why they did this other test. She has seen a peds rheumatologist and he is the one that said her pains are coming from being extremly double jointed. My daughter had a fever the last two days,( also complaining her legs hurt) first they were low grade and then this afternoon it got up to 104.2. We took her to an afterhours office and they did as much as they could do. And then we ended up taking her to the ed after that visit. We should have went straight to ed. They did some blood work, they are checking her sed rate and a few other things and I should hear back from her primary care dr after the holiday. The dr in the ed thought it was a virus because she started to have some loose bms. Her fever is down now and I hope it stays down so she can get some rest. I don't know what to do. WHat other test are there that I should ask her dr for? I got the impression tonight from the ed doctor that it sounded like she had some arthritis and that is why she spikes these fevers every so often.

Is her PCP a pediatrician?

How is the CBC?

Unfortunately I have seen a couple kids with joint pain and fevers get diagnosed with leukemia, hopefully they have ruled that out already. One of those kids had frequent nosebleeds though, which you did not mention.

My daughters pcp is a peds dr. And she told me that the other blood work she had done was not consistent with leukemia.

Excellent! I'm glad they are thinking about all the possibilities. And especially glad that that one has been ruled out!
