Yale GEPN

Published

Hi, don't see much discussion on here about the program. A few people I used to work with are nurse's now who've went through the program, but never had a chance to talk to them about the program.

Curious is the first year accelerated?

Big question for me is can you work during the program? Is it doable?

Decent program?

Appreciate the feedback.

Here is a thread with quite a few comments: Yale 2015

I went to YSN many years ago, as a traditional, experienced-RN student, but my classmates in my specialty track were all GEPN students. The first year is definitely accelerated. What I heard from them is that the first year is basically, between class/clinical and necessary studying, 16-hr days, six days/week. For a full calendar year (they went to school through the first summer). After completing that year, they joined the traditional students in the traditional MSN program. When I was there, none of the GEPN students I was aware of worked. I and a few of the other experienced RNs worked prn at the medical center. The GEPN students weren't licensed until the end of their second year, so they couldn't work as RNs (plus, they had no interest in, or intention of, ever working as generalist RNs -- they made that v. clear), and nothing else available to them as part-time jobs paid enough per hour to make it worthwhile giving up the study time and time for limited social life. The program is extremely rigorous and demanding (if I had truly understood how hard and demanding it was going to be, I probably wouldn't have gone, so it's a good thing I didn't know, haha). The standards are extremely high. The program is more than "decent," it's one of the best in the country. If you can get in, you will get an excellent education. Best wishes for your journey!
