Xavier University ABSN May 2021

Published

Hi everyone! I got provisional acceptance for Xavier's ABSN program for May 2021. I haven't chosen a location yet (Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland), but most likely will be picking Cincinnati. I wanted to see how many people applied and are considering Xavier's ABSN program? For current students/graduates of the program, how do you like it, as well as what are the pros/cons? Moreover, I also applied to Rochester, NYU, and Columbia, so I'm waiting on those schools before I decide on Xavier. Please comment! ?

Any review about Xavier ABSN make sure to put your review on Google review so people can see it. Google Xavier ABSN Cincinnati, Columbus or Cleveland and put your review on there based on the location you’re at so incoming students can see the reviews about this school!

@NurseAllNight I was accepted provisionally for Fall 21- wondering if you have any updates? I'm super nervous about a post here that mentions having to pass an exit exam? In general do you find that you are able to pass exams and do well in courses? I understand that I will have to work very heard and I am fine with that but I do want to at least feel my work is helping me pass and do well. Also, how often are in person clinicals? And at what point do they start (I am relocating to the area so if the beginning semesters are exclusively online that gives me more time). Thank you!

@Applemath I hope you still look at this site. But I attend Xavier and plan on leaving because of being a poor program. I would like to know where you are attending now? So hopefully you still look at this site LOL.

I would NEVER recommend the Xavier ABSN program to anyone. Save your money, save your time. It is not worth it to go here. There are plenty of other ABSN programs to choose from. I know more than 25 people in my cohort did not make it through and had to retake courses. I also know people who have been kicked out because if you fail 2 courses you can't come back. The professors are awful and do not support students. I am a hard working student and spend all of my hours devoted to this program, but the professors treat you like you are scum on the street. All nursing schools are hard, but at least choose a place that is supportive and wants to help you pass. I can not say it enough... do not choose this program!! I do not know a single person in my cohort that has one positive thing to say about this program.

I will 1000% back up with everyone else in this thread saying do not join the program.

It is a waste of your time and money if you are not 24/7 sunup sundown studying and have very minimal support from professors. They do not teach, you read the book, look up Youtube videos to supplement and hope for the best. Very expensive program for very little education. The program is constantly scrambling to figure itself out because it is poorly put together with admitting hundreds and having no plan for those who fail with their new implemented 75% exam average minimum. They are trying to protect their first pass NCLEX rates but instead of teaching students - they are just making the exams and standards harder to "weed" out people. PLEASE TAKE ME AT MY WORD AND DO NOT GO HERE FOR THEIR ABSN PROGRAM!!

The 75% exam average minimum is illegal!!  The dean tried to implement an exit exam and that you must pass with a 73.3 which equates to a 95% of passing the NCLEX to graduate in complex 2 course via syllabus. This “exit exam” is no where in the student nursing handbook and the program cannot just randomly implement things because they want too. The Spring 2021 cohort got an attorney and the students won because it is in violation of Ohio laws. The violation is the Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 4723-5 “The program shall not implement changes to policies for student progression, or requirements for completion of the program, regarding students enrolled in the program at the times the changes are adopted.” The dean took away the exit exam and students were able to take the ATI predictor exam but NOT being a requirement to graduation. If and only if the university wants to implement the 75% average it has to be when no students are enrolled like starting their first semester and it must be written in the handbook!! So they are still doing something illegal which screws students over! Attorney response below…

So if I went ahead and started the program next month, would this set score be mandatory for my cohort?

Yes it would be! Which is horrible because the exams are hard AF and a 75% average is challenging. If you were currently enrolled in classes prior to May 2021 then they cannot implement a 75% average because it will be in violation of Ohio laws.

I do NOT recommend for ANYONE to attend Xavier University's ABSN program. Everything that was said in this thread is 1000000% accurate. It feels like a huge relief to read the previous posts and know that there are others out there who understand what I have been experiencing. It's as if you all have been listening to my thoughts. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM BY ALL MEANS. Save your money and look elsewhere.

@Karam Absolutely! Each semester is broken up into 2 terms (usually 7 or 8 weeks per term), and the amount of work varies by term. The first semester is mainly focused on foundations and while it was a lot of material, this is the only class with exams so the workload is very doable and it is definitely possible to work during this semester. I dedicated about 8 hours a day to schoolwork and had some free time in the evenings and weekends.

Then, brace yourself...the second semester is much more difficult in comparison BUT of course, doable. My second semester was this past Summer and they were 7 week terms instead of 8 and let me tell you, that week makes a big difference in an accelerated program! Thankfully, this was during the lockdown across the country so I had no choice but to stay home and focus on school anyway ?  I wanted to keep my grades up so I worked at least 50-60 hrs a week, usually about 10-12 hours a day (with breaks of course!). I gave myself a little more free time on the weekends but used a lot of this time to study since we had 4 exams (in a row ? ) every other week. This semester is difficult because there are a lot of big classes all together- patho, pharm, mental health, and also med surg shoved in in the second term. I know people who worked during this time, but I personally could not imagine doing that AND get good grades.

Fast forward to now, I am in the third semester and while it is still difficult, I do think it is much better than the second semester. Nursing school is never "easy", but I would say this semester is more manageable. I spend about 9-10 hours a day on school (sometimes more) and give myself some free time in the evenings and weekends. This semester includes two more med surg classes, peds, OB, and nursing research. To touch on assignments throughout the program, typically each class will have one assignment (sometimes more) per week, which covers the module material and readings. This is usually a worksheet, almost always due on Fridays, and they are typically straightforward. Discussion posts are thrown in here and there too, and there were some group PowerPoint presentations (posted to a discussion board) in semester 2. There are also quizzes due on Sundays, usually one quiz per module per class. This may all sound like a lot, but I lived to tell about it and so did plenty of other people so it is all doable! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Does Xavier University require a TEAS or a HESI exam at the end of each semester? Also are comprehensive exams for classes, online or in person? Or is it just lab pass offs and online quizzes?

Xavier doesnt require a TEAS or HESI, but they use something called ATI that we completed assignments through and practice exams as well as proctored exams. Every course has a practice exam (unproctored) and a proctored exam that is taken before the course is up. It is scored by levels, which changes depending on the course but for example an 80-100% is a Level 1 (scored 100 in the gradebook), 65-79% is a Level 2 (90 in grade book), and so forth. ATI exams are hard because a lot of the information has either not been taught by Xavier or is really really specific so you may not always do well but in the gradebook it ends up being okay and is worth like 7 or 8% I think (practice exams are worth 2%). So while you are required to take it, there is no specific passing rate. The 75% rule does not apply to the ATI exams.

For regular exams, they are in person on campus through a locked browser on a computer. Your quizzes every week will be online taken at home, unproctored. Labs are fun and a great way to learn. The in person simulations can be nerve wracking at first, but end up being a fun experience and definitely help you improve your critical thinking. Hope this helps!

Everyone please be aware that the faculty of the program knows about the poor reviews on EVERY platform (Google, Blogs, etc.) and is desperately trying to improve their reputation. Be mindful when reading the excessively cheerful, pro-XavierABSN reviews, it seems to me like people are going undercover...
