Xavier University ABSN May 2021

Published

Hi everyone! I got provisional acceptance for Xavier's ABSN program for May 2021. I haven't chosen a location yet (Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland), but most likely will be picking Cincinnati. I wanted to see how many people applied and are considering Xavier's ABSN program? For current students/graduates of the program, how do you like it, as well as what are the pros/cons? Moreover, I also applied to Rochester, NYU, and Columbia, so I'm waiting on those schools before I decide on Xavier. Please comment! ?

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed responses! While I am bracing myself for the hard work ahead I am glad to hear it is somewhat manageable. I had to cram and complete 3 pre-requisite courses within a couple of months so I am hoping this pace will well prepare me for what is ahead. What really attracted me to this program is how friendly, supportive, and well informed the advisors are while I complete all my tasks. While it is an expensive program I love that I don't have to take 6-8 prerequisite courses so I can start and finish sooner. Believe it or not where I am from in California these programs are actually double and in the six-figure range!

I'm going to be in the Jan 2021 cohort in Cleveland coming up soon and I had a specific question about 3rd semester. Is it true we might have an exam or a clinical rotation commitment on Saturdays?  I was hoping you could give some feedback about your schedule in 3rd semester.

Thanks!

@RNplzz Hello! First of all, congratulations on your wedding!! In the first term of your third semester, you will have adult (med-surg) 2, adult 2 clinical, nursing research, and either pediatric or OB with their respective clinical. For my cohort, peds and OB clinical were both online and the peds clinical required a LOT of online work to make up for the lack of in person clinical. I'm not sure what the cohort behind me is doing now but if they are back in person, you won't have all of the online work for peds! Nursing research is a lot of research (of course) along with a paper, but there are no tests in this class. For my cohort, we had peds and OB exams on Thursdays, but your clinical can unfortunately be any day of the week except for Sundays. Clinical is usually finished by the week prior to finals, so you should be just fine to get married on that Saturday ?  The clinical instructors in my experience have also been flexible, so if by some chance you do have clinical on that Saturday (which you shouldn't, being so close to finals) I'm sure they would try to accommodate you somehow. I wish you the best of luck planning your wedding and please let me know if I can answer any other questions!

Hi! So I actually started the in the January 2021 cohort but I am going to push my start date back to May! I finished my last pre requisite course a day before they opened up our course work on canvas but I was already so burnt out I got behind the first week. So I’m gonna set myself up for better success in May and get started right away on the course work since my brain will have a little breathing room.

I found the material not to be super challenging but the lab guides were taking me about 4 hours each! Anyone who is in the program have any tips for these or is this a normal amount of time for these? We actually have to cite in APA format where we get each answer. Also any recommendation for study tips and what is or isn’t necessary to read? We have so much course work I didn’t even have time to make a study guide let alone know what to study for the labs. All suggestions on what works and doesn’t work for anyone in the program please send them my way!

Hi, I am just wondering what Orbis education class lecture-like. Does a real person lecture the class?

from what I learned, there are no lectures. it's pretty much teach yourself kinda program. there are weekly worksheets the go along with each module but no lectures, powerpoints, or guides.

With ORBIS, are the tests created by Orbis or Xavier? Im having trouble because I have two choices that are both Orbis schools that are my top choices...

Also what is schedule like ? Are most classes all done online ? How many days a week do you go somewhere in person ( clinical, lab, class)

NEW UPDATES!! I am dedicated to helping nursing students get a great education and I have some new updates that have been implemented in this program and I want to share it with you all. I have a friend currently in the Spring cohort set to graduate on May 1st. She just told me that they just had a zoom meeting and that Xavier ABSN has changed a policy in the middle of the semester for the last class of nursing school NURS 499 Transition to Professional Nursing. They are changing it to an Exit ATI Exam. The staff said if you do not pass all three ATI proctors for course Nurs 499 with a 70% orabove you do not graduate it doesn't matter if you have an A in the class. Thisis all new! When I graduated Fall 2020we only had to take a predictor for NURS 499  NCLEX practice but it was not a pass/fail or hindered our graduation at all. The smartest guy inour cohort couldn't even pass it. His scores were like 55-60% it is very difficult since there is no way to really study for ATI exams since the teachers have no clue what are on the exams. I got a 40% from what I remember. It was 160 questions. They are basically trying to weed out the people that will not pass NCLEX to save their NCLEX score since it’s so low and not be on probation, which is so upsetting since nothing about an exit exam was implemented in the student handbook to any of the students prior to starting the program. However, Xavier has changed that as of today. I am so sorry that they are doing this. I thought I would give you a heads up so you will not be alarmed when you get to your last semester of the program that you will have to take an exit exam to graduate nursing school when that has NEVER been a policy in Xavier. I would advise everyone to email the director of the Xavier ABSN to complain, because you signed a handbook at the beginning of starting the program and nothing was said about taking an exit exam to graduate nursing school at Xavier they just randomly decided to do so. You all are paying way too much more to let one exam that they pulled out of the wood works to hinder you from graduating. People in the program are currently protesting it!

thats appalling. I am so glad I decided not to go there. do you think the NCLEX pass rates are low due to the ORBIS Education curriculum?

It’s low because the teachers do not teach the students, there are no study guides and real direction to set you up for success. There’s only so much as reading the textbook and watching Youtube videos can do with horrible testing questions.

IF YOU GOT ACCEPTED TO THE XAVIER ABSN PROGRAM DO NOT GO BECAUSE THE PROGRAM IS NOT STRUCTURE COMPARE TO OTHER  ABSN PROGRAMS IN OHIO. I ATTENDED FOR 2.5 MONTHS AND LEFT BECAUSE THE PROFESSORS WROTE AN EXAM YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS AND EVEN AN RN WHO HAS BEEN WORKING IN  NURSING FOR OVER 20 YEARS CAN NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION. THE PASSING GRADE FOR XAVIER ABSN PROGRAM  IS 75%. I HAD CLOSER TO 100 PEOPLE IN MY COHORT AND 75% OF STUDENTS SCORE LESS THAN 75% ON THE FINALS. THE FINAL EXAM WAS 45% OF OUR FINAL GRADE. HOWEVER, THE DEAN'S  SENT A LETTER OUT STATING  THIS HAS NEVER HAPPEN BEFORE BUT THEY NEVER ADDRESSED THE ISSUE FOR STUDENTS TO DO BETTER ON FUTURE EXAMS.   HOWEVER, I TALKED TO ONE OF MY PROFESSORS AND SHE SAID, "IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA AND PASSING THE NCLEX THE FIRST TIME, DO NOT ATTEND THIS PROGRAM BECAUSE A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS STRUGGLE TO PASS THE NCLEX AFTER GRADUATION.''  ALSO, FOR A SECOND DEGREE PROGRAM, THE PROGRAM IS VERY EXPENSIVE COMPARE TO OTHER ABSN PROGRAMS LIKE WALSH UNIVERSITY, MOUNT UNION, URSULINE, AND KENT STATE UNIVERSITY WHERE THE TUITION COST LESS THAN $35,000 FOR FOUR SEMESTERS. THE PROFESSORS ALSO DON'T RESPOND TO EMAILS IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION. IF YOU ARE MOVING OUT OF STATE PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP EVERYTHING TO ATTEND THIS PROGRAM BECAUSE YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR TIME, MONEY, AND RESOURCES. THE PROFESSORS ARE ALSO FULL-TIME NURSES WITH NO EDUCATION AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE SO YOU WILL BE TECHNICALLY TEACHING YOURSELF. IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA, BECOMING A GOOD NURSE AND PASSING THE NCLEX THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND XAVIER ABSN NURSING SCHOOL.

If you are in the military and were in the military do not attend Xavier nursing or ABSN school because the program is not military friendly. I was in the ABSN program but dropped out because my exam grades were horrible no matter how much I study. I am in a new program now and my exams grade are above 90% which is a B+ in my new nursing school. My nursing professors in my new nursing school are also knowledgeable about nursing because they have an education and teaching background and are not just nurses. They also reply to their within the first hour of emailing them to answer questions and would even set up a zoom call to address your needs. I am confident that I am going to be a great nurse when I complete this program and pass my nursing boards.
