I had a nursing student observe with me two days this week. As she left today, she thanked me for my time and said she had learned a lot. We did not see that many students the 2 days she was here so I wondered how much she could have learned and said something to that effect. She said, "Oh, I learned a lot. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. There's a lot of critical thinking that goes on...."
I guess I have never given it that much thought, because that statement just floored me. As I relayed the story to our secretary, she gave me her thoughts about what I do. I must admit after these two conversations, I feel encouraged. Not that I have ever thought of myself as "just" a school nurse, but I never gave much thought to what I do on a daily basis.
What a way to end the week!!!

I'm glad someone expressed their appreciation. I tried really hard to prepare myself for what this job entails but nothing could have prepared me for how challenging it is! I am really starting to increase and improve my triaging skills which I'm very happy about! I don't know if I'll stay in the schools forever but I'm definitely appreciative of the new skill set I'm developing here!
Hang in there. I have learned so much. I have worked with 3 RN's here and have gleaned so much from them and their experiences. I have a great respect for those who do not have someone to learn from. Those who work multiple campuses are my heroes.
As far as continuing to work as a school nurse, I think I will stay. I have always said when my daughter graduates (which is this year) I'm not sure if I would remain or leave. However, I do like my summers, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring breaks.
