Would Phelbotomy Pay Me Through Nursing School?

Published

Hi! As many of you know, my recent pregnancy kind of put my LPN program on the "not happening" path. I found a phelbotomy course and thought that maybe that would be a good idea b/c I could start working this December. But could I make enough to pay for all the pre-reqs I would need to get into a RN program? I was hoping that I could use it to pay for pre-reqs and then maybe the hospital I worked out could help me with tuition assistance for my RN. But I have no idea what they make!

Has anyone here worked as one? What was it like?

Thanks!

I am kinda looking at the same kinds of situations but for different reasons. I am looking at taking a Nurse Assistant training course (3 weeks in my area) and then the Patient Care Associate course (I think 4 weeks). They cost about 600-700 bucks each. I called some hospitals and asked if they would hire me after taking the courses and they said yes :) . These courses are offered at my local red cross chapter.

I saw a phlebotomy class at a vocational school and the program was longer than the ones at the red cross. Also, I searched the hospitals websites in the area to see what jobs they offered and they all offered a lot more Nurse Asst. or Patient Asst. jobs than just phlebotomy. They both seemed to pay about 10-14 bucks in my area (MI).

I would check the red cross to see if they offer the program where you live and also check salary.com to compare what a phlebotomist vs. Nurse Assistant make...

phlebotomists don't make that much, but I don't know how much you will need. You may be able to find a phlebotomy job at a hospital or clinic that has tuition assistance though...that benefit is gold, in my opinion! :)

Thanks Tootyx121 & AmyLiz! I was thinking the CNA would be a bit much (physically) being pregnant plus there are no CNA classes around here but phelbotomy would defiently get my foot in the door!
