Would a hospital hire and RN for an LPN job?

Published

There is an opening at a hospital for an LPN position in Hospice Home care. I really want it! Will they hire me even though I'm an RN? I have 20 years of experience, 10 years in ICU. There is an RN opening too, but its full time and I can't do full time, because I love my other job too much. Can I twist their arm to hire me in any way? What can I do?

"In the only case that seemed to have a definitive answer an RN could work as an LPN as long as they still had their active license as an LPN, meaning she would need to pay fees and finish CEUs for two licenses."

I believe I've seen posted here that LPN's must surrender their licenses when they receive their RN license.

But then again, that just have been someone's "opinion," as you mention.

It was someone in one of the home health/private duty threads who told us that, and I don't recall what state she was from. I'm not sure if you can hold more than one license simultaneously in my state, either. I'd imagine it is not a common request and it may have been the agency she was working for that made the requirement rather than a BON. I've found that in home health with so many small and independent agencies there are a lot of ways to do things!

Here in Texas you cannot. At a hospital where I worked at the beginning of the year we had such a request. The manager called the state board and they said, "NO" an RN cannot work as a tech. This particular person was currently employed as a tech there, and had just passed her NCLEX that week. The new RN internship didn't start for two weeks, and the hospital wanted permission to keep her on as a tech for those two weeks while waiting for the internship to start, and they were told no.

So can I use this as a persuasive argument? ;) I can tell them in home health there are a lot of ways to do things! Since I am an RN I'm way more versatile, and I just want to be a Hospice nurse, now that I have a lot of experience I feel ready and anxious to start doing what I've always wanted to do.

I'm waiting on a call back from the IL board of nursing. I am going to ask about an RN working in an LPN job. Then call human resources back and beg for the job.:o

I just got off the phone with the IL BON and they say I cannot work as an LPN if I have an RN license. She said there are some RNs that have an LPN license and work as an LPN even though they have an RN license. She asked "can't you find work as an RN?" I said "not in my dream job which is Hospice" she said to see if they can't change the position to PRN, RN instead of LPN. and then she wished me luck. I hope I can convince them!!!

Nurses can and do hold dual licenses in my area as well. Check with your local authority.
