Workplace bullies

Published

Seriously, you guys in management... have any of you done a thesis on workplace bullies? There's some good stuff out there. I just wish that nursing management could be given the liberty (or take the liberty) of utilizing some of these principles. A Director of Maintenance threw me out of my own office (verbally that is)!! Alas I locked myself out twice and hence, per him, have lost my own office priviledges. I cannot at all prove that he was under the influence.. but that's almost besides the point. Fortunately his verbal assaults were witnessed.

May I ask what prompted the disruption?

What prompted the disruption.? Frankly there was no disruption. An LPN accidentally closed my office door and inadverantly locked it. The charge nurse called the maintenance person who is on call for such things -to come and unlock the door. He verbally barraged her (after not answering his beeper for 1 and half hours) and then did a fixed gaze stare at me for several minutes prior to a major verbal assault. Apparently he came in early this morning and was still outraged, yelling about it. I discused this with the acting administrator.... to whom he "dictated" further orders.

I guess my point is this.. The RNs showed up at work today... M.D. did not. (as is often the case in a nursing home setting). The maintenance man blows his stack, etc etc. Managerial staff must do more than to just take courses in bullying.

Wow..what a good idea for a thesis! lol. I know plenty of workplace bullies. Might have to do something w/ that when I start grad school next fall.

One incident that sticks out in my mind was between a new grad and an experienced nurse. Dietary had stuck an extra food tray in our break room because the patient had been discharged. Usually, on our floor, if you want the extra tray, you take a piece of paper and put your name on it. Well..."experience nurse" set a banana on the tray that she brought from home instead of her name. "New grad" saw that the tray had no name on it and ate it for lunch, thinking the banana was part of the tray. Well, "experienced nurse" jumped "new grad"'s case sooo bad...that she made her cry and made her go buy her another banana. It was aweful.

Actually that is REALLY a great research issue: Bullies in the workplace.

My 'wonderful" preceptor would be the first I'd study.

She actually told a frequent flyer, as she is standing at the nurses station, 20 feet from this patient: " Fred, get your ASS off the floor and get back up in that bed!" When he fell out of the bed in the hall of the ER!

Yes, I went over to him and made sure he was OK AND yes, I gave notice and I work elsewhere.

My license isn't worth getting her fired.
