Working with new surgeons (new as new to being one, not your facility)

Published

I wanted to get some opinions on new surgeons (ie ones who are fresh out of school)

How can you tell where the line is when a surgeon is just new vs bad?

I understand with any profession theres a steep learning curve and becoming efficient and confident at your job.

But how do you know when a surgeon is more than just new ? For example a new surgeon taking 2 hours to do a typical (no complications) gallbladder I can chalk that up to just being new.

But if a surgeon takes 5-6 hours to do a case that should take 90 minutes ? Or seems genuinely confused with a procedure (or is over reliant on a rep to perform a procedure). When does it become dangerous, and how do you deal with it ?

I wish I had a better answer but all I can do is sympathize because I was in a 3 hour cysto with stent placement recently.

One of my coworkers was in an ORIF that lasted over 8 hours this week...

Im all for having patience with people while they're learning, but how is that safe on any level ?
