Hi guys,
I know this is the MENS student forum but I am curious about your perspectives. Do you think you get more respect or less because your a male? Do you think working as a nurse will help you with your own female relationships? Do you wish there were more men in nursing just to balance out the estrogen vibe. I do. Just wondering?
Speaking from a military perspective in the medical field.
I trained in Basic at an all male base - we never had any problems with people going to authority with their issues, it was all discussed up front and usually ended with a fist fight, haha.
When I got into AIT it was co-op. Most of us were not prepared for the politics that go on once you are mixed together with males and females.
Whether it's feelings of intimidation, or just female authority figures making subordinates of the same sex feel more empowered. Males in the military receive a lot of problems from women going behind their back with claims that could have easily been resolved face to face.
Once I proceeded back to male training we never had problems again, and any time I was in a co-op setting there always seemed to be drama with complaints based around gender issues.
This is why Marines still train based around gender. I think that once we see the next few generations progress into retirement gender conflicts will start to subside, but I saw a lot of bias in the military hospitals I worked in based around gender.
If a female complains to a female superior, they are more likely to receive special treatment. The same goes for a male complaining to a male superior. However, in my experience - most complaints that did not warrant using the chain of command were brought up by females.
I have little experience working in the medical field on the civilian side. But I can see how females may feel intimidated by certain male figures due to the way American culture is.
If the civilian side is anything like the military side, I would much rather work with nothing but males.
As a woman, I'd have to say that mostly an all female environment is HELL. Ugh. Drama, Drama, Drama, little petty remarks, underhanded backstabbing. Drives me nuts. I really would love to work with more guys.
I think the nursing environment is changing quickly. I'm in the RN program right now and 1/3 of our class is of the male gender I too agree that guys are much easier to work with most of the time. Women aren't very nice to each other in the workplace!

Women are annoying and hard to understand, but I can't live without them.
I go to school where girls are about 70 % in general and I am Nursing student. Think about it.
I get used to this environment since I have 2 sisters... and mostly my cousins are female. '_;
