Working in Iraq or Afghanistan as a civilian nurse

Published

Specializes in ICU.

Does anyone here have experience working in either Iraq or Afghanistan - not in the military - but as a civilian nurse?

There may be an opportunity for me to go there on a sabbatical, providing ICU care to the military.

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thankyou

Mary

mary, hi !

viet nam vet here ( tells ya a bit about my age :coollook: ) and also one hell of a crisis nurse, psych ( even if i do say so myself ! ).

anyway.....since the towers came down on 9-11,

have also been trying to get overseas, in theater, to either iraq or afghanistan, in order to work

with our brave men and women in helping them prepare to come back home ! thus far, no luck !

i do work with them here in the states, and many

come back totally lost, and without a clue as to how

to " get back on with life ".

thus far, the only way i have heard is if i drop about

40 lbs and then i could, if i was accepted, come back

into the army, this time as a nurse. thus far, have

lost five lbs !

there is a contracting agency which is now recruiting dod ( department of defense ) nurses to work in the area, but unless you are dod, that avenue is a no go !

should you ( or anyone else ) hear of anything, please get back to me. will do the same on that end if you send some way to shout your way.

many thanks to one and all.....and please do keep our

men and women over in iraq and afghanistan in your

prayers !

mike

HI.

I am working over at Landstuhl Medical Hospital in germany for the US Army as a civilian nurse. I would like to go down range or Theater also but as of now this is the closest I have come as this is the trama place for all our wound warriors. I love working here but won't lie the transition is tough, esp as a civilian. If ya check it out on usajobs.gov you can find listings. They have only recently started hiring civilains so check it out. Hope this is helpful.

HI, I am an ICU nurse working in the trauma department for the past 7 months of a year deployment. Navy.

I have met some RN civilians. Usually from Australia or Canada and working in the ICU. Now there are none. Not sure why. We do have lots of staff now that we have moved into an actual hard facility. I guess the Navy has all the staff needed thus far. Supported with mostly US Navy but also have air force/ army as well as Canadians, UK, Dutch , and Danish.

Hi Mary. Un sure when you really wrote this but, if you are a thrill junkie jump on the next flight, it depends on the unit, and or location that your at. you can get close enough to here rounds buzzin your ears or not even here moitezers over head. I served in a foreward support unit and loved it never a dull moment.

Hi tucker144

I came across this conversation and saw that you've been working as a Nurse in Iraq for years now and your reply is the most recent one. I hope you could help me find websites/information where I could apply as Nurse in Either Iraq, Afghanistan or any army units. I always wanna be in the service but became a Nurse, so I think I just have to find a way for me to be in the service and practice my profession. Plus its more than that, I just really think its time for me to do this now. I hope you can help.

Dont think there is going to be much happing over there now, but if you have that burning desire their are companys that will still be in service there. Dont laugh but go into soldgier of fortune sites their youo will find companys that do that alot of times you have to sighn a contract for 2yrs. Good luck and duck. Your services there will be above and beyond that of normal people (civilians)
