Hi Everyone,

I've just started my diploma in nursing and I start working at the hospital on wednesday! I'm very nervous :(. I have no experience of caring and I just wondered if any of you guys knew what my mentor would expect from me on my first day? I'm working on a private ward with 12 beds, each in seperate rooms. It's a surgical and medical ward. If any on has any good tips they would like to share with me that would be great.

Heidi,

Everyone has to start somewhere and I feel like if you have a good attitude you will do fine. I hope your instructor will be with you. I think for my very first clincial day ever I did an assessment of my patient, just follow the trifold, it tells you what they want as far as assessment. I also gave my patient a bed bath. It will come with time. I stayed low on the radar my first clinical. Now I am confident without being cocky. A lot of your clinical grade is subjective, so don't act like you are falling apart, even if you feel like you are. Ask for help if you are unsure about a skill.

Stay out of the nurses way. We have a policy, we try not to be at the nurses station desk unless we are getting info out of a chart or asking a question. If a nurse seems overwhelmed and you have a minute, ask her if there is something that you are allowed to do that can help her with her patients. You are going to do great!

:) Oh thankyou so much for that, I feel a bit more confident now. It's really nice to get advice from others who have been there before and knows what it's like.

hey!dont get nervous just stay cool and very attentive......you'l do best....i know you would....just stay focused on every thing that you do or is planning to do with your present assigned patients and you must know every rationale behind the things that you are doing with your patient....first things first dont rush.......and plz record everything.......

some sort of advice anyways im still a senior student nurse here in phil so just have confidence

Thanks Lector! That's really helpful. I'll take you're advice and stay cool! I start tomorrow at 1:00 till 9:00.
