In January I will start college for the first time. If I was younger this would have been easier. However, I have a family, mortage, car payment, & 2 wonderful collies. I`m the main provider for my family. & can`t afford to drop to part time at work.
I`m looking at 4 semistars of college including the Pre-nursing courses. Which probable means 2 yrs of school. Community college doesen`t seem to teach LPN classess during the summer. Is it possable to work full time & go to school full time? Have any of you done it? or have any advice? or do I need to slow down & take more than 2 yrs to get it done?
Been there, doing that. I'm an LPN, working on my RN with a supposedly part-time job that I work 30-40 hours/week. On top of school and work, I've got 4 kids I'm rearing on my own. It is challenging, and it can be done.
Someone mentioned getting pre-reqs out of the way, that is a great place to start. The people who are having the most difficult time in class now are doubling up with non-nursing classes.
It's been said that I was "lucky" to only be taking nursing classes. No, it was taking another year (and that year was painful, I'm 47 and anxious to be done with all of this) but the non-nursing classes didn't require as much work as the nursing classes have. By having all of the pre-reqs done, I concentrate on nursing classes alone.
My house isn't as clean as I'd like, my kids are responsible for their own homework, and we have had to prioritize many things out of existance. One sport only, homework must be done as soon as they get off the bus, no friends in the house when I'm not here.
It can be done. Try to be patient and kind with your self. "Another year" sounds so long, but it really flies by.
Best wishes!
The type of program I was in, full time, full year, it would be impossible to work full time.
YOu go to college: 8 am to 3.30 pm. If labs, then stay till 7pm Mon- Fri.
Some Saturdays, labs 8 am to 12 noon.
After a school day, there is about 3 to 5 hours of homework, approx 4 to 6 hours homework on weekends. (also stated in the program broschure)
The odd time, up till 2 or 3 at night to hand in papers.
Coming to class late was not an option (late and it is marked down), it was fast paced. Attendance always taken.
There were a couple of students that worked maybe 6 hours on the weekend. They gave it up.
There were some students with university degrees and they also struggled with the work load. Some students were sent to councelling to learn how to manage stress/anxiety.
But, I guess where some of you are you have the option to pick a few classes here and there. Not an option where I am . So if you can take a few classes at a time, then sure, you probably can work full time, have kids, teens, pets and a husband, maybe even a barn.
