If a nurse were to forget to renew their license, and continued working for an entire month, how likely do you think it is that the BON would allow him/her to keep his/her license? Anyone have experience with this?
Asking for a "friend?"
Yeah, it's a big deal. I can't advise on "telling" on yourself to your employeer or if call outs from work are more appropriate until the license is renewed, but I'm guessing there is some big legally stuff that could fall on you, uh, your "friend" if you/them keeps working without a license i.e. not covered with any employer provided or personal Liability Insurance or at the more severe side being prosecuted by your states BON for practicing without a license.
Your "friend" better get the license straightend out right away.

The potential damages of you working without a valid license are actually worse for your employer than they are for you. For yourself, while there is no grace period as long as you renew ASAP and get back into good standing I doubt if there will be any repercussions. This happened last year to a co-worker and nothing happened to her for renewing late. Expect a late fee for renewal, but do it now. Now the problems for your employer could be expensive! If they have medicare patients that you were working with every shift you worked without a valid license they will not be reimbursed for those dates. Same goes for CNA's working if their certification expires. This is why employers usually stay on top of license and certification expiration dates. Between the multiple reminders to renew from both the BON and your employer it's not easy to miss a renewal.
