working in the er

i need help im a PCT and I will be working in the ER.. next week I would like to know how is it working in the er and should I be worried

for the first time

i absolutely love working in the ER.. I'm an EMT and an ER tech and it's an amazing, chaotic job.You can learn as much as you want from working there and it's a wonderful family like environment. If you want to learn, you can learn so much!

Is it always necessary to go through a phlebotomy course and EKG course? Or do they teach you on the job? Just curious

The health system I worked in provided EKG and phlebotomy training but they were both done off site.

It's okay to be nervous when you're new in the ED, but be as open as possible to new experiences and learning skills! I am an ED tech and truly love it. There is never a dull day, and I've learned so much even in just 6 months. I find that the ED nurses are also soooo much more open to teaching us techs things, too, than the nurses in other departments. At my hospital, I find that everybody is so much more enthusiastic all the time in the ED. I guess you kinda have to be though, cause the ED is wild! (In a good way, of course.)

At my hospital, we learned EKGs during our regular job training. Phlebotomy is taught by our department's RNs on the job after several months of employment. So I would say no, it isn't always necessary to attend a full separate course for the two skills. Just depends on the place!
