Workforce shortage grant

Wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the MHEC Workforce Shortage Grant? Did you receive it? How much did you get and for how long? How rare are these grants? Has anyone had to relocate before completing he required work committment? If so, how did that get worked out?

I have applied for this year and just wish I had some general idea as to how rare these are. I know state budget cuts have cut a LOT of funding so what held true a few years ago, might not be relevant these days anyway.

Thank you so much!

Hi Sienna,

I applied for this grant a couple weeks ago. I have yet to hear back with anything, but I have heard that it is one of the more popular grant programs with nursing students, especially ones with no chance to get need-based aid. It says right in the form that money may not be available for all qualified students, so I figured I would get mine in ASAP because it seems like once the funding is spent for the year, that's it. There is an option to pay the money back if you for some reason cannot complete the required work committment, but I am not sure what penalties there may be. If and when I hear anything back I will post to the group. It would be awesome if everybody else could do the same!

I read somewhere on the web site that the awards aren't even made until after classes begin. (late Aug/early Sept.) By that time I will have had to have all my arrangements made, so I guess IF I got this it would just come as a nice surprise. (and certainly help pay for childcare throughout the year!)

Hi. Does anybody know if there are any programs/grants/scholarships for Maryland residents that are going to school out of state?? I am going to a nursing school in Virginia and I am ineligible for any financial aid (Pell) since I have a bachelor's degree:-(

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The only suggestion I have would have is to discuss it with your FA office at the school you are attending. I can't think of anything I have read.

I am wondering the same thing. I applied for it, but from what our financial aid office says, MD is already running low on funds. He said I shouldn't expect to get it, but it doesn't hurt to try. I believe notifications are supposed to go out in late August.
