Work Vent- help

My manager came to me today and said that come the fall I would be the preceptor for the new senior student. I told her that I don't feel as though I'm the best person for it because I am horrible when it comes to teaching. I feel bad for the students when they are doing poorly and have a difficult time failing them even when I know they are doing things wrong. I hate critiquing students because I had such a bad experience with my own preceptor and nearly quit because of it. I don't want to be the reason someone gives up.

I was also told that I would also be next in line to take charge. I like being a floor nurse and am not a take charge type of person and I don't want to deal with the unit politics you have to deal with while in charge.

She said that it's time I move up. She framed both as a request but as evidenced by the fact I am now signed up for the workshops, it not a request.

Any advice???

You should take this as your manager saying that she has confidence in you - perhaps more than you do in yourself. Take the workshops, ask lots of questions and ask your manager to assistand critique the job you are doing with your first student. You may find that you make an excellent preceptor because of the empathy you feel for your preceptee.

You should be honored and try to reconsider.

I was unsure of myself after two years in our ER when all of a sudden I was scheduled for a Triage workshop and then a Preceptor workshop. I questioned my manager who thought I was crazy to even think I wasn't doing well. I now enjoy precepting and can tolerate triage and people say I do both well. Go for it!
